26 Things to Do This Fall in Huntsville with Kids

Fall is in the air in Huntsville and Madison County, and if you love making lasting Fall memories with your family, this is the list for you.

So bust out the pumpkin spice, pull out your jeans from the closet, and get the whole family ready to celebrate cooler days, football season, costume making, beautiful leaves, and one of the most exciting times to be in Alabama!

1. Stroll through the Scarecrow Trail

This one is a Huntsville tradition! Pick out your favorite scarecrow at the Huntsville Botanical Garden and even have a full fledged scarecrow day while you’re at it. There’s plenty of spots ripe for fall photos and it’s the perfect place to enjoy the cooler weather. Don’t miss out on the Garden’s annual BOOtanica event either.

2. Ride the Barnyard Coaster at 4D Farm

There’s so much more than just pumpkins to enjoy at this patch – though there’s plenty of those as well! Cheer on the contestants in the pig race, hop on the jump pillow, play in the farm house, slide down the slides, and more. Find a full list of attractions and plan your visit here.

3. Head over to a Fall Festival

It’s festival season, and there’s plenty to enjoy in North Alabama. Whether you head over to the Madison Street Festival for a day of family fun, tune in during the Athens Storytelling Festival, or catch a Harvest Festival, there’s plenty of ways to get into the fall spirit.

4. Climb Aboard a Fall Train Ride

If you have a train lover on your hands, you’ll not want to miss the fall train rides at North Alabama Railroad Museum. Whether you catch a ride to the pumpkin patch or simply sit back and take in the fall foliage, it’s the perfect way to enjoy the season.

5. Slurp on Some Apple Slushies

Sure, in theory the weather should be cooling down, but in reality we are in Alabama. The best way to beat the heat while staying true to fall is to sip on an apple slush.

6. Pick a Peck of Apples

Speaking of apples…don’t miss out on a visit to a local orchard. In addition to picking a peck, the kids will love taking a bite out of the fresh harvest and coming home to bake something tasty. Need some inspiration? Don’t miss out on these tips and recipes.

7. Frolic Among the Fall Leaves

Fall in North Alabama is a gorgeous sight when the leaves begin to change. Take in the Fall foliage and soak in the cooler temperatures with a scenic hike among the trees. Grab your hiking boots and head over to our list of local trails to plan your next adventure.

8. Play with the Ghosts

Head over to the Dead Children’s Playground at Maple Hill Park for some spooky fun. In addition to a day of play, this is the perfect opportunity to mix Huntsville history with a few ghost stories too.

9. Pick the Perfect Pumpkin

Is it even fall if you don’t visit the pumpkin patch? Support local families at one of these North Alabama pumpkin patches and enjoy a day of family fun. Whether you’re wanting to meet new friends at the petting zoo, bounce on the jump pillow, dig in the corn pit, or get lost in a corn maze, there’s a fall farm for you.

10. Get Spooky During the Huntsville Ghost Walk

Sure, Huntsville is known as the Rocket City, but we’re also big on history. Hear stories from the city’s haunted past and learn why the spirits remain during the Huntsville Ghost Walks.

11. Watch the Witches Ride

Grab your pointy hats and get ready to watch the witches ride across North Alabama. These witches use bikes instead of broomsticks and may even offer a treat or two to onlookers. Find a full list here.
