Family History Mornings are back at Alabama Constitution Hall Park

After being closed for three months the EarlyWorks Family of Museums just announced the reopening of two of its three museums in Huntsville. Both the Historic Huntsville Depot and Alabama Constitution Hall Park will resume operation on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. “We are excited to have folks come back out and enjoy these great historic sites. Sharing Alabama’s history is our passion”, said Bart Williams, Executive Director.

New Safety Precautions

Both attractions will run under a reduced schedule, offering guided tours with a maximum capacity of 6 people at select times, Wednesday through Saturday. Tours must be reserved in advance online. All tour guides will wear face coverings while conducting tours. At the conclusion of each tour all high touch areas and surfaces will be sanitized in preparation for the next tour.

Family History Mornings

With the opening of Alabama Constitution Hall Park one of our favorite events, Family History Mornings, will also resume. This event happens each Saturday from 9AM-Noon and is billed as a “open-air exploration of history for the entire family” to include trade and arts displays, living history, games, and craft activities.

To ensure safety, they are currently limiting capacity for this event as well. Again, tickets must be purchased in advance. We suggest arriving within 15 minutes of your designated start time. Once inside, your family can freely roam through the park and enjoy all the exhibits and activities.

Each week families can expect to see the woodworker shop, the blacksmith shop, and candle-dipping (kids will be allowed an opportunity to try this under supervision). Additionally, there will also be a variety of other fun historical activities depending on the community volunteers that week. These include a potter, a living history presenter, and an herbalist to name a few. Director of Guest Experience, David McLellan explains, “Every week can be different, it’s a great way to engage with our community and a lot of volunteers come out to support the program.”

McLellan also emphasized that all three museums are taking safety precautions very seriously and identifying ways to make the experience safe for visitors and presenters. “Everything is being developed so that it can be enjoyed as a family unit without coming into unnecessary contact with others,” says McLellan. “While the historic buildings will be open, only one family unit at a time will be allowed to enter those spaces.”
