Know Your Vote: Greg Shaw, Madison City Council District 4

Greg Shaw

With the goal of keeping local parents (and voters) as informed as possible about all things parent-related, the editors of Rocket City Mom compiled “4 Questions for the Candidates”. We asked all the Huntsville City and Madison City candidates to answer the same four questions, and have published their responses unedited and as they have sent them to us.

Get to know a little about each candidate and where they stand on serving local families in our full Know Your Vote series. We encourage all of our readers to exercise their democratic right and vote on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

4 Questions with Greg Shaw

Q. What do you see as the top three most pressing issues facing Huntsville today? What are your plans to address those issues?
I will continue to be City Council District 4’s voice making sure we have the infrastructure, the best state of the art recreational parks and greenways and schools in the state. As Madison continues to grow and prosper, I will make sure that our city lives within its means and make every tax dollar count.

Q. Why do you believe you are the right person for this office?
My family, business, and I are proud to call Madison home and it has been an honor to serve as your City Councilman. I am currently serving my first term and I am proud of the accomplishments we have made but now more than ever we need experienced leadership to make sure Madison is prepared for the future.

Q. If you are currently serving in this position, what new or existing initiatives do you look forward to working on? If you are a challenger, what will you do differently than the incumbent?
I am proud of the following accomplishments that we achieved in my first term.

  • Continue to provide our city with growth management and manage a comprehensive plan that benefits the city as well as the school system.
  • Repaved and resurfaced over 15 miles of roads throughout our city including on Sullivan Rd. repaving and widening
  • Improved and build greenspaces such as Bradford Creek Trailhead on mill Road, pedestrian crossing on County Line Rd/ Palmer Rd, and walk path on Wall-Triana
  • Expansion at Palmer Park including improvements to the ball park and soccer fields
  • Installed new sidewalk from County Line to Palmer Park.
  • Added parking at Dublin Park to create a safer environment
  • Recruiting businesses to our city such as Town Madison, Publix on Hughes Rd, and Duluth Trading
  • Supported our school by refinancing bonds that created a 1.1 million dollar rebate back to our schools and have supported the new elementary school located by the new Kroger

But there is still more work that needs to be done and I ready to make sure that our city continues to prosper and thrive.

Q. What is your overall vision/mission when it comes to families living in your city? What are your ideas about how to best serve them specifically?
Families come here for our schools which are the heartbeat of our community. This is what makes our city so great! We have the best schools in the state and I will continue to make sure our schools receive the support they need to continue providing our children with the best education possible. Also under my tenure we have created and funding more park improvements, greenways, greenspaces, walking trails, and upgraded our fields and equipment. I will continue to make sure this is a priority. It is what makes our city great and a location where families want to raise their families and call home. Kim and I know this first hand.
