Know Your Vote: Chris Baker, Huntsville City Council District 1

Chris Baker

With the goal of keeping local parents (and voters) as informed as possible about all things parent-related, the editors of Rocket City Mom compiled “4 Questions for the Candidates”. We asked all the Huntsville City and Madison City candidates to answer the same four questions, and have published their responses unedited and as they have sent them to us.

Get to know a little about each candidate and where they stand on serving local families in our full Know Your Vote series. We encourage all of our readers to exercise their democratic right and vote on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

4 Questions with Chris Baker

Q. What do you see as the top three most pressing issues facing Huntsville today? What are your plans to address those issues?
The three most pressing issues that face our city are, roads and infrastructure, the growth of crime and systemic racism. I plan to work with the city council and city planner and help come up with solutions for the city’s growing traffic problem. As for the growth in crime, I plan to talk with parents and teachers in my district and see how we can reach the kids while they are young. I would like to educate them and give them alternatives to crime and deviant behavior. The solutions to systemic racism would be to sit down with the council and community activists and have honest and transparent communications on how we can stop systemic racism.

Q. Why do you believe you are the right person for this office?
I believe that I am the right person for the job because I am a man of integrity and hard work. My education and my business experience has given me the opportunity to talk and listen to people from all walks of life. Although I am firm on my beliefs and convictions, I am open-minded enough to listen to different perspectives of other people.

Q. What will you do differently than the incumbent?
If I an elected, I would make sure that I listen to and address the needs of the people in my district. Unlike the incumbent, I would not not abandon my supporters. I would always try to carry out the promises I made to them. And I would always vote for the interests of the people in my district.

Q. What is your overall vision/mission when it comes to families living in your city? What are your ideas about how to best serve them specifically?
My vision for the families in my district is to help have a better quality of life. I would like my district to be a vibrant and growing community that adds to the unique city that Huntsville is becoming. I plan to meet with wise council in my district and develop a plan that best serves my district.
