“Let’s Open the Gates.” Trash Pandas to host community events and camps but no baseball (yet)
- Plans are in the works for several community events at Toyota Field.
- Trash Pandas will offer full week summer camps starting June 1.
There are a lot of people in North Alabama who have waited a long time for baseball to return to our area. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has made that wait longer and Governor Ivey’s latest announcement regarding the Safer at Home Order hasn’t exactly changed that. While the order allows for entertainment venues to operate at 50% capacity, the Rocket City Trash Pandas must wait for the go ahead from Minor League Baseball in order to host games. This adjusted order, however, does mean that a stadium like Toyota Field could potentially hold up to 3,750 people for non-baseball events.
“We are certainly disappointed to not be playing baseball right now, as is the rest of Minor League Baseball,” says team CEO Ralph Nelson. “But while we wait to hear about our season, why not make the best of this situation and try to give the people of North Alabama what they want? Let’s open the gates.”
Planned community events include:
- Concerts
- Happy hours
- Fireworks shows
- Instructional Baseball camps.
- Movie nights
- Small festivals and more.
It’s important to note that the Trash Pandas staff will be adhering to all CDC guidelines to ensure that everyone feels safe as they enter the gates for any event.
And Summer Camps!
Most importantly for Rocket City parents may be their planned week-long summer camps for kids ages 5-12. We had the opportunity to chat with VP of Marketing, Lindsey Knupp, who gave us the inside scoop on the camp. “We have limited the max number of campers to 200 and groups will be broken down to no more than 20 per group, says Knupp. “There will be arts and crafts at the picnic terrace, cooking classes in the stadium club, batting cages for baseball practice, the clubhouse will be showing movies, and there is plenty of room on the concourse for all kinds of fun activities.”
Currently there are two camps scheduled although Knupp confirms that there are plans to add more if there is a strong demand. Campers who sign up for both weeks will receive a free Sprockets Kid Club membership for a year.
Of course, there are also plans in place to keep everyone safe and follow all relevant government guidelines for camps. “Employees and counselors will all be wearing masks, there are numerous sanitation stations, and everything will be wiped down frequently,” confirmed Knupp.
