Our little site is growing… Welcome to our monthly roundup of Athens Family Fun! Each month Rachel will be delivering fun and family-friendly events in Athens to busy parents there.  Of course, our specialty is free/cheap things to do in Athens but the ultimate goal is spending time together in your community. Enjoy!

Happy February, RCM readers! Do you have the winter-time blues? Want to get out of the house but aren’t sure what to do or where to go? Look no further! Here are some great ideas to get your kids out of the house, exploring the outdoors, and learning more about our great little town.

Special Athens, AL Events in February

African-American Heritage Trail

February is Black History Month, and what better way to celebrate than by taking a self-guided tour of sites important to African-American history in Limestone county. The African-American Heritage Trail brochure allows you to explore these areas in Limestone county and learn more about the people who have influenced our community. This is a great educational outing for kids!

Spring Sports Sign Ups

Cost: $70 for baseball and softball | $40 for soccer
City-wide | More Info

Registration is open now for spring sports! Baseball, softball, and soccer sign-ups for ages 5-12 (baseball and softball) and 5-13 (soccer) are live! Registration ends Feb. 10th for baseball, Feb. 15th for softball, and Feb. 20th for soccer.

Play Outside Day

Families are encouraged to get outside and enjoy the various trails, parks, and outdoor areas in their hometown. Athens has more than 20 trails to explore, as well as several parks with great playgrounds for kids of all ages!

Black History Program

The Athens-Limestone Community Association will present a program for Black History Month. The presentation will begin with the Emancipation Proclamation and travel through history to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.

Harry Potter Party: TriWizard Tournament

Does your child love Harry Potter? Have they read the 4th book or seen the movie and wished they could compete in the Triwizard Tournament? This year’s theme for the Harry Potter Book Night is just that! Bring them to the library to put their name into the Goblet of Fire and compete for the Cup! Tickets on sale through February 2nd.

Princess Bride Film Night

Bring the whole family out for this exciting, adventurous, and romantic classic at Footlights. Admission is free; there will be concessions available for purchase. Feel free to dress up!

Athens Main Street Chocolate Walk

Saturday, February 8, 1-6 PM

Downtown Athens | More Info

Last year’s Chocolate Walk sold out fast and was a huge success! Don’t miss out this year! Downtown businesses give out chocolate to ticket-holders while giving great discounts on their merchandise. Activities for the children are available at many of the businesses. If you don’t grab your tickets for this event, you can still shop downtown that day and take advantage of the discounts!

Board Game Day

Thursday, February 1st and 15th, 12:00 – 4:00 PM

Come join the library staff for a day of board game fun! Bring your own board games or try out some of theirs. This event is recommended for ages 12+, but anyone can attend! Younger children should be accompanied by an adult.

Little Lambs Spring Consignment Sale

February 28th – 29th

Little Lambs is a seasonal consignment sale. Items include clothing, shoes, toys, strollers, accessories (bows, headbands, etc.), and more! Saturday is half price day for select items. Visit the website for more time details and to consign or volunteer.

Weekly Programs at Athens Library in February

Ink Slingers – Tuesdays at 4:00 PM
The program is for 6th – 9th graders who love writing and have stories to tell. There is a 10 person limit in this program due to the number of curriculum books they have. Call 256-232-1233 to register.

Baby Storytime – Wednesdays at 10:15 AM
For babies age 0-18 months. Ms. Amanda and Ms. Ambry lead stories, songs, bounces, tickles, rhymes, and fingerplays!

Toddler and Preschool Storytime – Wednesdays at 11:15 AM
For kids ages 18 mo.-5 years. It is a program focusing on developing a child’s social skills through stories, rhymes, music, felt board activities, and interactive storytelling.

Spectrum Storytime – February 3rd and 10th at 4:30 PM
This is a program for children of all ages with special needs. The class has a focus on the autism spectrum. There are sensory toys for students to use during storytime. A picture schedule is used so that the children know what to expect. Each child gets a bean bag to sit on so that they have their own special place during the class & lights are dimmed.

Teen Time – 4th Thursday of every month at 4:00 PM
With different themes and topics every month, Teen Time is a place for teens in 7th – 12th grades. Enjoy crafts, science experiments, snacks, book talk, and hanging out!

Life 101 – February 13th at 4:30 PM
For teens grades 7-12
Life is tough. Learn how to cook basic foods, change a tire, sew a button, and so much more! For teens – Every 2nd Thursday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30 starting September 12th.
