Madison Christmas Capers 2021
December 12, 4:30 PM
The Madison Christmas Capers is an interesting story that dates to 1925 when George Walton ‘Doc’ Hughes rented the Humphrey-Hughes property at 200 Main Street for his drug store business. During years of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, Hughes started a holiday tradition dubbed the “Christmas Chicken Capers”. On Christmas Eve, ‘Doc’ Hughes would toss live chickens from the roof of the drug store. The chickens had tags attached to their legs; people could re- deem the tags for prizes in Hughes’ store. Anyone who caught the chickens received the prizes and kept the chicken for Christmas dinner.
Fast forward to now, the Madison Station Historic Preservation Society reenacted the Christmas Capers – on top of the old Drug Store with rubber chickens, “Doc” Hughes’ grandsons Larry and Walt Anderson and over $3,000 in prizes! Music performed by the Madison Community Orchestra and hot chocolate served by the Madison Rotary Club. Stay for the movie in Homestead Park at 5:30 PM!
