Christmas Card Lane Returns to Madison

  • Located along Church Street in historic downtown Madison
  • December 2-26, 2021

Christmas Card Lane on Main Street and Church Street adds a festive touch to the charming old houses and decorated Christmas trees in old town Madison, Alabama. The cards are displayed on the lawns of those beautiful old downtown houses. The lovely homes are elegantly decked with white lights, greenery, bows, and other decorations that help to make the season fa-la-la-la-la jolly.

The Madison Arts Council displays the Christmas cards to enhance the appeal of the downtown area, which is ripe for shopping at the local stores and boutiques. Buying local is the perfect way to keep your tax money in our area!

Driving Down Christmas Card Lane

Before I went, I previewed the cards online – the photos don’t do justice to the paintings created by local artists. I actually thought the cards would be a bit larger—they are painted on 4’ x 6’ plywood—but I’m sure the point was to not obscure the lovely historic homes and their twinkling Christmas lights.

Some cards are whimsical, such as the O Mustache Tree. Others are elegant, some are simple and look like a Currier and Ives print, and some feature nativity scenes.

If you go on a sunny day, you can take a casual stroll to focus on the intricacies of the artists’ work. If you go on a cold evening, the cards can be seen from your car windows. After dark, the cards are illuminated with small spotlights until 9 p.m.

The cards are not in a high-traffic area. When I drove down the streets, I simply put on a blinker and pulled closer to the curb when a car came up behind me.

My favorite cards were washed with color and contrasted against the gray, bare old oak trees and fallen leaves on the ground. Some of the cards featured 3-dimensional elements, and one card even had a real, flickering light in the painted lantern.

I was able to get my husband to drive down the street on Sunday night after worship. The cards really stood out, and this time my daughter was game for checking out the cards. Her favorites were the O Mustache Tree (who doesn’t love the play on words?) and the cards that depicted doggies under Christmas trees. However, I think my daughter’s favorite part of the drive was the lit Christmas trees along Main Street. There is just so much to see!
