Education Spotlight: Burritt on the Mountain

Burritt on the Mountain Huntsville, AL

The jewel on the mountain, Burritt on the Mountain is Huntsville’s first museum. It offers a wide variety of venues and activities including viewing original exhibits in Dr. Burritt’s mansion, exploring nature on woodland hiking trails, discovering the past in its historic park, and enjoying a visit with barnyard animals. In addition, it offer special events and educational programming throughout the year. Recently we asked their Education Director, Tammy Cooney to tell us a little about the museum and what families could expect in the coming year.

Tell us your organization’s story. How did it come about? What need does your business fill in the community? What makes you unique?

In 1955, Dr. William Burritt left his home and 167 acres to the city of Huntsville to become the city’s first museum. Since that time, the site has been developed to provide recreational, educational and artistic experiences to our community while preserving the history of our area. We provide field trips, educational outreach, virtual programs, festivals, original hands-on programming for families, day camps, home school enrichment classes, outdoor concerts, a folk school, holiday events and more.

What “problem” do you see in the community that you can solve for your customers?

We offer a safe and natural setting (10 minutes from downtown Huntsville) for families and friends to enjoy learning, exploring and relaxing. Our fun programming provides opportunities for families to enjoy being with each other while learning together.

What advice can you offer parents who are looking for ways to supplement their child’s educational journey?

To supplement your child’s educational journey, be sure to provide lots of different activities and environments. This can include outings to museums, exploring nature, participating in camps, or even something as simple and ordinary as a shopping trip if it includes conversation that explains things like decision-making, nutrition, or budgets. Any activity can be a learning activity. Be sure to encourage curiosity and questioning and lead by example. Show that you enjoy learning too. We hope that you and your child will come explore the many opportunities that Burritt on the Mountain provides. See you on the mountain!

Hiking at Burritt
