This teen is serving his family themed dinners and they are FABULOUS.
My happy place during this time of social isolation has been TikTok. Yes, yes, I know this app’s target audience is not really middle aged women, but I love mindlessly scrolling through all the creative dancing and hilarious videos people upload. I also like to follow teachers and mental health professionals – they have some surprisingly uplifting advice for anyone struggling during this time. The recipe accounts aren’t bad either.
But my absolute favorite has been a teenager named Derek who is creating themed dinners to serve his family. His sister has documented all his dinners and, Y’ALL – they are DELIGHTFUL.
Derek is ridiculously creative, and clearly spends a lot of time planning out each meal and how he will execute it. One night, he recreated a hibachi experience, complete with rolling food cart and showy antics with sake.

He wanted to do a romantic Princess-themed dinner and apparently took over his parents office and moved the furniture out just so he could serve a fancy fire-side meal.
Meanwhile, my oldest teen needs help boiling water.

Mexican Cantina night consisted of margaritas, homemade tortilla chips & salsa, and table-side guacamole! The main course was steak & chicken quesadillas. IKR???
My favorite touch is how Derek strung colorful lights in the dining room to provide some festive ambience.

The most hilarious theme (so far) turned out to be a Hooter-esque recreation, complete with hot wings, fried pickle chips, and… spot-on costumes.

Derek also issued a Chopped challenge, isn’t afraid of searing a good grilled steak, and even goes the extra mile for dessert. I seriously hope this kid is considering a career in the culinary arts because he is KILLING IT.
