Whimsical Woods at Burritt Gets Flip Flopped
The Whimsical Woods have returned to Huntsville’s Burritt On the Mountain – but this time it’s been flipped upside down! New creatures have arrived to find their homes in the forests, plains, and oceans around the world have been damaged by pollution, deforestation, and wildfires. They’re going to need your help, and the help of other Whimsical Woods heroes this Spring.
In the woods, your family will find stories of familiar characters, plus some new friends. As you journey through the storybook forest, dive into classic stories, try fun activities, and learn what it takes to be an eco-hero to save the homes of our animal friends and protect the planet for everyone.
Whimsical Woods Gets Flip Flopped!
If you’ve experienced Whimsical Woods before at Burritt, you’ll recognize familiar characters. The nursery rhymes of Mother Goose, The Frog Prince, The Little Mermaid, The Three Bears, and The Wizard of Oz will all be back. Hollywood made these stories famous, but some kids will experience them for the first time here. Burritt will also feature stories derived from African American and Native American cultures, exposing young readers to a larger world of literature and magic.
New This Year – Ocean Sole
Over a half million flip flops found in the ocean off the African coast have been transformed into sculptures and toys by artists around the world. These up-cycled works of art are now used to spread awareness and support conservation education programs world-wide.
By using the Ocean Sole artwork in characters throughout the Whimsical Woods exhibit, Burritt can provide a global awareness not found anywhere else. Children will learn how our Kenyan friends met this environment issue with innovation, creativity, and invention. Visitors of Whimsical Woods Flip Flopped will leave with a new appreciation of what art can be. Perhaps they will look at creativity through a new – and more Earth-friendly – lens.
Whimsical Woods Camps
In addition to experiencing this exhibit as a family, kids can also get a bit more immersive at one of Burritt’s day camps this Spring and Summer! Each day, campers will go “Into the Woods” for hands-on activities about conservations, literature, history, gardening, hiking, and more. There are three-day and two-day options for campers, as well as the whole week.
