Spring 2016 Family Flick Picks

It’s officially Spring, and with it a new edition of Family Flick Picks! Take some time out of agonizing over your March Madness bracket to spend some time with yours kids at the cinema. The traditional Summer movie season is not yet upon us, but there are still several strong entries this quarter, including new entries in the Captain America and X-Men series.

Looking for a theater to watch these flicks? We’ve compiled a list of local theaters and more about why you should enjoy movies as a family.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Summary: The first movie based on the final novel of the acclaimed YA series (you know the drill by now), Tris and Four go beyond the wall into Chicago, leaving behind family and into a new, far more dangerous world.
Also Recommended: other YA novel/movies series like The Maze Runner, The 5th Wave, The Hunger Games, or Harry Potter.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Summary: Zach Snyder directs this attempt at starting a cinematic DC Universe with the ultimate comic nerd’s dream matchup. Batman travels to Metropolis, fearing a world that allies Superman to go unchecked (somehow Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, and Doomsday are also involved).
Also Recommended: The Justice League cartoon series, Batman: The Animated Series, and Superman: The Animated Series.

The Jungle Book

Summary: A live-action, CGI heavy reimagining of Disney’s famed 1967 animated classic. Featuring the voices of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, and Christopher Walken.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Summary: A prequel/sequel (huh?) to Snow White and the Huntsman and based on the fairy tales “Snow White” and “The Snow Queen” seratchetes the introduction of a Frozen-Elsa to the series.

Ratchet and Clank

Summary: The popular video game series makes its onscreen debut; Ratchet the Lombax meets Clank the Robot and together they attempt to save the Solana Galaxy from destruction by Chairman Drek and the Blarg.

Captain America: Civil War

Summary: The latest entry in the Captain America series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise sees Captain America and Iron Man split into opposing factions; other superheroes are forced to take sides (including Spider-Man!)

The Angry Birds Movie

Summary: The popular mobile game franchise makes its cinematic debut. An island paradise populated by happy birds, except for unusually angry Red, is visited by mysterious green piggies. Red and his pals Chuck and Bomb must find out what these pigs are really up to.

X-Men: Apocalypse

Summary: The next entry of Bryan Singer’s X-Men series introduces Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant, who awakens after thousands of years of hibernation to destroy humanity. Professor X, Mystique, and the X-Men must stop him.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Summary: The sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and based on Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass. This live/CGI-heavy version is produced by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman (in his final film role).
Also Recommended: Alice in Wonderland (either the 2010 version or the 1951 Disney cartoon), Lewis Carroll’s original Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
