Outdoor Fun

It’s the perfect time to go on a Guided Hike with The North Alabama Land Trust on Sunday, March 20th at 2:00 PM! Their beautiful Wildflower Trail is in Blossomwood and one of my personal favorites. It’s difficulty level is Beginner and kids of all ages will really enjoy a frolic in the woods, splashing in the creek, and looking for birds and critters from the safety of the trail with a little help from the expert eye of trail guide Lynne Weninegar. Hikes are free, but donations are very much needed and appreciated. More great kid’s hiking trails can be found here if you want to strike out on your own.
All Aboard!
The Historic Huntsville Depot is now open Wednesday-Saturday, March-December from 10AM-3PM – admission is $5. Little train lovers will have a great time exploring Depot Park, and learning all about Huntsville’s history inside the museum. Bring a picnic lunch or grab a bite from a nearby lunch spot. Want to make a day of it? While you’re there, hop next door to the Huntsville Madison County Convention & Visitor Bureau and go on a Lucky Duck Walk scavenger hunt around downtown Huntsville! Read our full review here.
Bridgestreet Fun
Here’s a great option for a little fun in the sun. Head over to Bridgestreet Town Center and ride the train ($3) & the carousel – ($2) and when you finish head over to the kids section of Barnes and Noble which boasts a train table AND a LEGO table. Just don’t blame us if you end up doing a bit of shopping and spend more than $7!
Parks & Rec
Area parks are a great option for fun because they wear your little ones out, they are easy play dates when other children are present (and they will be during spring break), and they are completely FREE! Before you head out the door be sure to check out our Parks Guide filled with our favorite area parks. In the guide we dish on amenities including which parks have bathrooms, shade trees, benches, and the best play equipment for different ages.
Indoor Options
[themify_hr color=”orange” width=”75%” border_width=”1px” ]Skating Rinks
Roller Time and Roller Coasters in Huntsville and Skate Castle in Decatur are three local indoor roller rinks that offer lots of options for families to have fun all year round and this spring break they are offering plenty of specials to entice you to come try them out.
- Roller Coasters in Owens Cross Roads is open Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12PM-4PM for both Spring Break weeks, and kids can skate for $4. (Be sure to ask them about their awesome Eat, Skate, Play Combo that includes laser tag and pizza if you’re going with friends!)
- Roller Time is offering an afternoon skate from 12PM-4PM with $5 admission on Tuesday-Friday, March 22-25.
- Decatur’s Skate Castle is open Monday-Friday, March 21-25 from 1-4 PM with admission at $4 and skate rental at $2.
Jump & Play
It’s called Restless Kids Syndrome and all mothers recognize the signs. First children get whiny, then items in your home begin to break for inexplicable reasons, slapping and hitting of siblings may occur. Avoid this serious dilemma with these hopping good options. All are great indoor play options and all are offering open play and discounts the next two weeks.
- Matrix Gym – Whiz Kids open gym is another “oldie but goodie” in our RCM arsenal but worth revisiting when looking for options for your littlest ones. Read our review here. Whiz Kids is offered six days a week. Check our RCM calendar or their website for exact times. Exclusively for children ages 6 and under it’s only $3 if you’re a member and $5 if you’re not.
- Pump It Up – A great place to be in March! They’re hosting several Open Play sessions during both weeks of Spring Break, and admission is only $7, but you must register online in advance otherwise it’s $8.50.
Bug Out
Do you have a budding entomologist among your brood? Even if you don’t, taking a daytrip down to Decatur is worth considering especially since the price is so competitive. The Cook’s Natural Science Museum is open Monday-Saturday from 9AM-5PM (but they are closed from 12-1 for lunch) and it’s completely free. Check out the Kids Corner on their site before heading down there and download free bug-related coloring books and puzzles.
Book It to the Library
Whether you visit virtually or in person (our favorite) the Huntsville Madison County Public Library is guaranteed to have something that will keep your kids of all ages occupied and entertained. In addition to their normal events, many branches are holding special spring break events like afternoon movies and crafts. Check this calendar to see what’s happening and get in on all the FREE fun.
