Weekend Roundup September 25-28

It’s officially Fall, ya’ll! The temps are cooling down, and that usually means it’s much more bearable to be outside here in Huntsville, so there’s TONS of events happening around town! Lucky for you we round up our favorite free, family-friendly things to do. Leave the laundry for later. Now’s the time to get out there and spend some quality time with your family if you can.

Not included in our picks but a great choice nonetheless are all the pumpkin patches and corn mazes that are now open including 2014 Fall Activity Guide sponsor Lyon Family Farms. Consignment season is in full swing, and Farmer’s Markets are starting to bring in the Fall produce. Our lists for both come in pretty handy!

Concerts On the Dock

Friday from 6-8 PM

Grab a sweater – the Fall chill will be in the air at tonight’s Concert On the Dock! But don’t let that stop you, especially when the performer is DeQn Sue, an incredible singer/songwriter who brings a truly unique performance and sound every time she hits the stage. DeQn Sue is eclectic and smooth with a soulful voice and an alternative twist. She gives the audience a heartfelt and honest show every time she performs. CotD is a family and pet friendly event, so bring your kids, dogs on leashes, lawn chairs, dancing shoes and hula hoops. Please carpool!

A Night Dark & Grimm

Experience an evening of family-friendly games, costumes, and fun – all based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales! There will even be a visit from a live owl thanks to the Rise Raptor Project, Inc. Free Day at the Museums

Thanks to Smithsonian Magazine’s Free Day Live!, local families can enjoy a full day for free at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and/or Sci-Quest Hands On Science Center. It’s free, but you MUST sign up online here and print out your pass. It’s the perfect opportunity to participate in USSRC’s GPS Adventures exhibit before it’s gone, and to experience a Science Weekend over at Sci-Quest. PRO-TIP: This is a pretty popular day at the museums, so plan to go early and be patient!

Celebrate Man’s Best Friend

The 12th Annual Huntsville Obedience Training Club’s (HOTC) Dog Fair is a great afternoon of furry friends, impressive feats, and hands-on activities for your family, even the four-legged ones. Vendors’ booths with dog-related items for sale help lend a country-fair atmosphere to the event, enhancing everyone’s enjoyment. Your dog can even win prizes for pooping and looking like a celebrity! Sample the World

The Huntsville iFest is a one-day International Festival featuring a wealth of global performances and music, international comfort foods, over 30 country cultural displays, FREE children’s activities, and more! This free event is a signature one for Huntsville, and shouldn’t be missed. There’s even an international open air market, showcasing local international food vendors, handicraft, arts and Food trucks.

Grease Is the Word

Saturday from 11AM – 6:30PM
Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12, free for those 2 and younger. $1 off admission for toga wearers
Downtown Athens, AL (map)

Named one of the “Oddest Festivals in Alabama” by al.com, the Athens Grease Festival is fun for all ages! This celebration of All Things Fried includes food, music, children’s art activities, vendors, and a mechanical bull. Toga-wearing is encouraged as organizers set out to host the World’s Largest Toga Party. Get the full entertainment schedule here.

Music at McGucken

Saturday 5-9 PM
Cost: $20 per carload, walk-ins $5 per person

All proceeds from this event will directly benefit the sports programs that are hosted within the park so you can feel great about enjoying an evening of family fun and music with your friends and community.
Live performers include Cristina Lynn, Ocean Drift, and Jed-Eye. Reasonable concessions will be available , and picnics are allowed (but leave your alcoholic beverages at home!).

Movie in Providence Park

Saturday at 7PM

It’s football season – what better way to enjoy it by watching Remember the Titans under the starts with your family & friends? Grab a bite from one of the surrounding eateries and be sure to stop by the Homewood Suites tent for a free mini-football for the first 50 kids.
