Additional Resources
Alabama Homeschool Expo
The Homeschool Expo is a two-day event with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of products where parents can review and purchase the latest curriculum, hear great speakers who give practical encouragement, and receive personalized help and answers to any question. The workshops emphasize the practical aspects of working with children in ways that will promote their educational, social and emotional growth. The expo typically takes place in late June and tickets run $20-$25 with advanced registration.
Six Flags Read to Succeed Program
Usually in early Fall, homeschool teachers can register for that school year’s Read to Succeed Program and earned tickets to Six Flags are mailed in early May. Every homeschool teacher must register as an individual family, even if you participated in the program previously as a homeschool co-op, organization or group. All homeschool teachers must register in order to participate in the program. Even when the program is closed, homeschool teachers can continue to use the many resources provided by Read to Succeed including lesson plans, activities and more.
Karen Gann had a marketing communications career in high tech before taking a sharp turn into stay-at-home-momdom and homeschooling. She grew up in the Tennesse Valley, lives in Huntsville, and is wife to the wittiest man alive, mother to two head-strong and independent girls (they're adorable, really), and human caregiver to the cats. Addictions include Facebook, Pinterest, NYC's Radio Lab, coffee, food, and politics (not necessarily in that order but sometimes all at the same time). She's also the marketing director for Pandia Press in her spare time.
What a GREAT list!! From one Alabama Karen Homeschool Mom to another, thank you!!!!
Awesome list! Thanks!
This is a great list! Thank you so much!
Fantastic list! Just wanted so share that from what I could tell, The Cardinal School appears to be solely a private school and not a cover school. I looked through their website and didn’t see anything related to homeschooling. Did I miss something? Just wanted to point that out. Thanks so much and Happy New Year! ~ Kim
Thanks for the heads up Kim. I’ll do some detective work and look into that.
You should also add Whitesburg Baptist to the homeschool cover school list. https://www.whitesburgbaptist.org/schools/homeschool/
Thanks for the information Jamie! We’ve added it to the list.
How do I get added to your Photographer’s listing?
Way Home Christian School is a homeschool cover that has been around for over 20 years. They serve all of north and central Alabama.
I’ve got two things to add!
1. A new co-op is starting in the fall called Rocket City Co-op. Our facebook group is https://www.facebook.com/groups/688521927919192/ for more information. Here’s a quick description:
Rocket City Co-Op is designed to be a parent-run co-op. Our goal is to have enrichment classes not based on any one curriculum. Each mom will be responsible to teach twice throughout the year. The topic taught is up to the mom, it can be anything! Classes will be divided into ages 4-6 (with the exception of some older 3 yr. olds), 7-10 and 10+. A parent-run nursery will also be provided for children 3 and younger. We see this co-op as an opportunity for our kids to learn things other than what we as individual families may do in our own homes. We also want it to be a community and source of friends. Field trips and Moms’ Nights Out also take place throughout the year!
2. Our co-op will be located at a new homeschool resource on Jordan Lane in Huntsville called Play, Create, Discover which offers classes and curriculum & materials consignment. Their website is http://www.playcreatediscover.net.
Thanks for compiling these resources!
Also there is CHEF of Alabama which has supported homeschooling in the state for close to 30 years. They also sponsor an annual homeschool convention here in the state. Their website is: https://www.homeschool-life.com/al/chefofalabama/
For homeschool legal information as well as support – there is Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). Their website is: http://www.hslda.org
This is a great resource. I am a leader with Trail Life USA and would like to reach out to our fellow homeschooling families. We home schooled five sons through CCA. They were in BSA and four are Eagle Scouts. I am sure you have heard of the changes in BSA and our family is no longer associated with BSA. How would we be able to have Trail Life USA listed on your site. We now have two troops in Madison County with others being planned.
Hi Mark – I’d love more information! Can you please send me links to swalker(at)rocketcitymom.com? Thank you!
Does anyone know of any co-ops for special needs teens (high spectrum autism to be more specific). I’m seeking socialization for my child with similar peers.
This is a great question – I don’t have an answer offhand but I can ask around. Have you checked with Making Connections yet? (https://www.makingconnectionsasd.org/)
I currently am not a homeschooler, but have a few good books that I enjoyed while we did homeschool. I would like to sell them. Is there a site I can do this without joining Facebook? Thanks so much
Rocket City Consignment also takes school resources, but if you’re looking for an online site Facebook is your best bet. I’d say Craigslist but please do that safely. I always have meetups at police precincts.
