Book It to the Library: December Edition
We’ve sung the praises of the Huntsville Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) system before and with it pointed out all the awesome things they do for the community and how almost everything they do is FREE. But we still feel that we can’t emphasize enough the critical importance that a great library system plays in the educational and mental health of the area it serves. Both children and adults benefit from the classes, story times, and events that occur within its walls and so Rocket City Mom is bringing you a new feature titled “Book It To The Library.” Each month we’ll bring you highlights of upcoming events from the libraries within HMCPL.
Harry Potter’s World Exhibit: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine
BRANCH: Main Library, Youth Services
DATES: Now – December 28th
AGES: All ages
INFO: Everyone loves the magical world of Harry Potter, but did you know you can learn some cool things about history, science and medicine from reading the books, too? Were there ever really dragons, unicorns and basilisks? Was there a Sorcerer’s Stone? The magic in J. K. Rowling’s series of Harry Potter novels is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance, Science, Magic, and Medicine explores the intersection of these worlds, featuring highlights from the collections of the History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine. A special thanks to Huntsville Pediatrics Association for their sponsorship of this event. For more information contact Annie Pendergrass at 256-532-5982 or apendergrass@hmcpl.org

Mandy Pinyan has been a passionate book lover from an early age, where being busted for bringing Stephen King to school (a book, not the guy) led to much reading by flashlight. She turned out okay. She is the Youth Services Coordinator and Manager of Outreach Services at the Huntsville Madison County Public Library Extension and Outreach Department, where she can be seen driving a Rainbow Van or a Bookmobile in between gigs. Mom to a tween, Adelyn and wife to a ruggedly handsome outdoorsman with an obsession with planting bamboo, Mandy finds enjoyment in painting, gardening and geeking out over various pop culture. A small menagerie of pets - dachshunds Matt Damon and Angel, kitty BB and Boston-Chihuahua-chupacabra mix Bailey just make the chaos complete.
