The City of Huntsville opened a new park and playground as part of the North Huntsville Library and Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center. Formerly the grounds of Berachah Christian Academy campus, this $11 million project includes a new 19,000-square-foot library which encompasses a beautiful new park with walking trails, playground, pickleball courts and a renovated gym.

Kid’s Playground

It’s the perfect place for kids to run off some steam after library storytime! The playground has lots of mulch layered over poured rubber to break any falls, and a variety of equipment to enjoy:

  • 4 big kid swings and two toddler swings
  • 4 slides
  • Merry-go-round
  • Climbing areas
  • Bouncy plane & race car for toddlers
  • Shaded pavilions
  • Covered picnic area
  • Paved walking trails that are stroller-friendly

Parent Tips: I love that the paved walking paths wind around both the playground and the outdoor fitness park, making it easy to keep an eye on kids playing while parents stroll or work out! The large covered picnic pavilion would be a great place to have a small birthday party for kids. There is no fence that surrounds the park, but the playground is located pretty far back off the busy road.

An outdoor fitness center for adults too!

Grown-Up Playground

There’s even an outdoor fitness center for adults and teens! This cool space to work out is unique in Huntsville and includes:

  • Decline sit up bench
  • Swedish ladder
  • Variable monkey bars
  • Step up platforms in three heights
  • Dual chain pods
  • Chain ladder
  • Variable pull up station
  • Overhead rings
  • Pickleball courts
  • Covered pavilions

Not sure how to use the Thrive 900 Fitness Center equipment? There’s a walk-through tutorial on the grounds and you can download useage instructions and even workout programs here.
Bathrooms: There are plenty inside the Shurney Center if you need them: a family restroom is also available, and all have baby changing stations.
