Welcome back to our quarterly roundup of Madison Family Fun! Each season Melissa will be delivering fun and family-friendly events in Madison, Alabama to busy parents there. Of course, our specialty is free/cheap things to do in Madison but the ultimate goal is spending time together in your community.

The weather is cooling down, leaves will be changing, and pumpkins are appearing on front porches everywhere. Fall is here and we’ve rounded up some Madison family fun to enjoy together. Whether indoors or outdoors, your family is sure to enjoy a perfect Fall with these fun events.

Tribute Night

Head to the Toyota Field on September 11 for a special night as we honor our heroes, both locally and nationally.  The USA Patriots Amputee Team returns for the Tribute Night softball game and fireworks on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.  A postgame performance by Brandon Elder will follow the fireworks.

Palestrina to Poulenc: Music from the Renaissance to Early 20th Century

Asbury Church presents Palestrina to Poulenc, a chamber music concert featuring pieces from the Renaissance to the early 20th Century. Music aficionados will be able to experience the efforts of members of the Madison Early Music Project who are delighted to introduce the community to a selection of Renaissance consorts and more from Bach through Poulenc, featuring members of the Strings of Pearl ensemble which recently played for the space and missile command symposium members of Rocket City Viols, members of the Valley Conservatory and the Valley Conservatory Early Music Festival Concerts, and music professors from UNA. This free concert is presented by Asbury’s own Traditional Worship Orchestra Director Erin Huelskamp Bohn, along with Director of Traditional Worship Kenneth Watson, who will both be playing as well.

American Girl Book Club

Attention all elementary school-aged girls who love the American Girl books and dolls! American Girl Book Club is back at Madison! American Girl offers many character stories that help explore historical perspectives from a girl’s point of view. During our American Girl Book Club Meetings, we will gather to discuss a different American Girl. We’ll make crafts or play games that tie into the book, character, or era. During this September meeting, we’ll travel to the early 1900s and meet a curious orphan named Samantha. Girls may bring a doll to our meeting, but a doll isn’t mandatory. James Clemens School Homecoming Parade

The JCHS Homecoming Parade route will begin at Heritage Elementary, and it will end at James Clemens High School. The parade line up begins at 4:15 pm. Residents are invited to cheer them on along County Line Road! Other festivities include: the James Clemens Homecoming football game on September 24, and the Homecoming Dance on Sept. 25 on the practice field at JCHS from 8-11 PM.

Trash Dash 5K/10K and Fun Run

Race in the Rocket City this fall! Our second annual Trash Dash features a 5K, 10K, and Kids Fun Run. Participants who register by September 1st will receive a special edition race shirt. All races start and finish at Toyota Field.

The Haunted Kingdom

The Inaugural Railyard BBQ Brawl and Music Festival is coming to Historic Downtown Madison AL. This first year event is unlike anything to happen in downtown in its storied history. Walking Tours of Madison App Launches

There’s a new app in Madison that will help you explore the city and learn a little history along the way! The unveiling of the app will coincide with the completed renovation of the historic Madison Roundhouse on Front Street. Girl Scouts dressed in historic costume will be at each of the historic locations along the app’s route. Five local organizations have joined forces to create this smartphone app – the Rotary Club of Madison (Sunset), Madison Visionary Partners, the Madison Station Historical Preservation Society, the Madison Chamber of Commerce, and the Girl Scouts of North Alabama.

The Madison Arts Council (MAC) is pleased to announce the return of the Madison Concert Series. This year is going to be bigger and better than years past. The City of Madison is working to complete Home Place Park that will be the new venue for future music events. MAC has partnered with Madison Visionary Partners to raise money not only for the park itself but future Arts programming in the park. The concerts are being held at Old Black Bear at 6PM on Thursday. MAC and MVP have forged a new path to lead to better events to enrich the citizens of Madison.
