There’s so much going on in this month we decided to list all the big events here in one place for you. Of course, there are even more things to do in our full Event Calendar, but you can use this list to plan your family fun with these April kid’s events in Huntsville and North Alabama!

April Plays & Performances
Grissom High School presents Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
When: April 6-7 and 13-14 at 7PM; April 8 & 15 at 2PM
Where: Grissom High Auditorium
Cost: $10 – $18
Take a fantastic musical adventure with an out-of-this-world car that flies through the air and sails the seas. Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one family-friendly blockbuster that audiences will find “Truly Scrumptious.” Trouble occurs when the evil Baron Bomburst desires the magic car for himself. The family joins forces with Truly Scrumptious and batty Grandpa Potts to outwit the dastardly Baron and Baroness and their villainous henchman, the Child Catcher.
Alabama Youth Ballet presents Snow White & Paquita
When: April 6-7 at 7PM; April 7-8 at 2PM; Special needs performance on April 5 at 6:30PM
Where: VBC Playhouse
Cost: $14 – $20; ages 2 and under are FREE. Special needs performance on April 5 is also FREE
Alabama Youth Ballet Theatre is the non-profit performing company of Alabama Youth Ballet. Come enjoy time watching Snow White dance with her Prince and laugh at the adorable Seven Dwarves and root against the Evil Queen! Then be delighted with performances from Paquita. It will be fun for the whole family! There will also be a free showing on Thursday, April 5 at 6:30PM for special needs children and their caregivers.
Huntsville Ballet Company presents Cinderella
When: April 7 at 2PM & 7:30PM; April 8 at 2PM
Where: VBC Concert Hall (map)
Huntsville Ballet company will end their season with the enchanting production of Cinderella in three performances in the Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center. Amazing costuming and special effects including a spectacular glowing carriage will be utilized to enhance the magic of this beloved fairy tale. During the specially ticketed Cinderella Ball, children can meet Cinderella and be invited to come on stage and dance with her prior to the Saturday matinee show.
Theatre Randolph presents The Wizard of Oz
When: April 13-14 at 7:30PM; April 14-15 at 2PM
Where: Thurber Arts Center, Randolph School
Enjoy Theatre Randolph’s all-school Spring musical production of the Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland, is widely considered to be one of the greatest films in cinema history.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in Concert: A Film Screening with Live Orchestra
When: April 14 at 7:30PM
Where: VBC Concert Hall
With its innocence and sincerity, Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi fantasy set hearts aglow. Thanks in large part to the sensitive orchestral score by John Williams, the story of Elliott and his unusual friend captured the imaginations of millions and became a cultural phenomenon. Grab some popcorn, settle in, and share the magic with the whole family as we screen the original film — and perform the soundtrack live with full orchestra – in this one-of-a-kind film concert spectacular, presented by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra.
Fantasy Playhouse presents Raggedy Ann and Andy
When: April 20 & 27 at 7PM; April 21-22 & 28-29 at 1:30PM & 5pM
Where: Von Braun Center Playhouse
The curtain rises on a very special playroom where toys magically come to life! The world’s most beloved rag dolls must gather their playroom playmates and lead the charge into the “deep, deep woods” to Looney Land to bring the beautiful French Babette back home before she is found missing by their owner. Audiences of all ages will delight in this whimsical tale of adventure and friendship.
Concerts on the Dock Spring Session
When: Fridays from 6PM-9PM, beginning April 20
Where: Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment
Cost: FREE; $5 suggested parking donation
Concerts on the Dock has grown from a small gathering of music lovers to an institution in the Huntsville music scene since the first note was struck in 2008. This free, family friendly series is all about creating a laid back atmosphere for friends of Lowe Mill to enjoy original content and interesting new acts, Friday nights during the Spring and Fall. Bring chairs, picnics, friends and pets on a leash and join us under the water tower!
Special Events & Festivals in April
Spring Farm Days at Burritt
When: April 7 from 9AM-5PM and April 8 from 12PM-5PM
Where: Burritt On the Mountain
Cost: Regular museum admission
Join us for a taste of springtime as you visit our barnyard animals, experience historic skills, and learn about life on the farm during the 1800’s. This year we will have a few new animals visiting the park for this special event. Visitors are sure to be fascinated by the sheep-shearing and blacksmith demonstrations. Learn what attending school was like in 1918 as you participate as a student in our brand new Rosenwald Schoolhouse. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for modern conveniences after trying historic tasks such as rug beating, butter churning, and mattress stuffing!
Huntsville Botanical Garden Spring Plant Sale
When: Members only April 12 from 9AM-6PM; Open the the public April 13-14 from 9AM-6PM and April 15 from 12PM-5PM
Where: Huntsville Botanical Garden
Join us for our 31st annual Spring Plant Sale! There will be food and refreshments as well as specialty vendors alongside free soil testing, free advice from garden & plant professionals, and more. Bring your own wagon and have plants loaded for you after you shop. Always colorful, interesting and huge, there are also Garden activities for children and educational talks for adults. This year’s sale promises more plants and seminars plus entertainment, children’s activities and food trucks!
Heads N Tails Crawfish Boil
When: April 14 from 3PM-9PM
Where: VBC South Hall
Cost: FREE; food available for purchase
The 8th Annual Heads-N-Tails Crawfish Boil will take place in South Hall of the VBC on Saturday, April 14th! This event is FREE TO ATTEND and is a family-friendly event with face painting, inflatables and other free activities to entertain the kids! Crawfish and other yummy food will be available for purchase! We will also have craft beer tastings and your favorite beverages available for purchase! And what crawfish boil would be complete without Zydeco music?!
March for Babies & Superhero Sprint
When: April 21 at 8AM-11:30AM
Where: UAH Charger Park
Cost: FREE to participate, donations accepted
Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. every year, and each one needs us. The money you raise will be a lifeline for moms and babies near you and across the country. Join more than 1,000 people at Charger Park at UAH in support of moms at every stage from preconception to post-delivery with research, programs and education—and it all comes together with a celebration at March for Babies on Saturday, April 21st. We will continue our Superhero Sprint this year for all of our amazing kids (ages 1-10) beginning at 9AM. The Superhero Sprint is a kids “fun run” that will be implemented at all March for Babies walk sites, and puts the March of Dimes “mission in motion.” We can’t wait to see you there!
Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve
When: April 21 from 10AM-2PM
Where: Hays Nature Preserve
Mark your calendar for April 21st! From 10am to 2pm at Hays Nature Preserve, we’ll celebrate Earth Day and Operation Green Team will have plenty for you to do, like a morning birding hike and two butterfly releases! Earth Day with The Lowe Mill Community Garden
When: April 21 from 10AM-9PM
Where: Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment
Join Lowe Mill A&E as we host our second Earth Day Festival. Focused around our growing community garden, the event will include a day filled with activities. Help with tree maintenance and garden harvest. Bring house plant clippings to trade with other attendees. Partake in our seed swap.
Nature Connects – Build-A Lunch & Movie in the Garden-LEGO Batman
When: April 21 from 11:30AM-3:30PM
Where: Huntsville Botanical Garden
Cost: Under 3 are FREE | $40 Family Pack includes 5 combo tickets | $10 Individual combo ticket (non-members subject to Garden admission)
Join us as we kick-off Nature Connects® with lunch & a movie! Nature Connects: Art with LEGO bricks at Huntsville Botanical Garden will be on display running March 9 through May 20, 2018. This exhibit, by certified LEGO® artist Sean Kenney, features millions of bricks transformed into larger than life nature inspired statues! Enjoy a fun LEGO® inspired lunch followed by the LEGO® Batman movie. Kid Friendly event with plenty of active building going on after the movie in our build stations set-up just for YOU!
Panoply Arts Festival
When: April 27, 5PM–9PM; April 28, 10AM–9PM; April 29, 12PM–6PM
Where: Big Spring Park, Huntsville
Cost: Tickets are $10/day and children 12 and under receive FREE admission
Each spring in the heart of the Rocket City the arts are in full bloom at the Panoply Arts Festival. The Festival celebrates music, dance, theatre, and the visual arts, making Panoply (as defined by Mr. Webster) a “magnificent, impressive array”! Three days of musical and visual arts, children’s activities, and performances – an experience that should be on every family’s Must List! Bring your favorite outdoor seating!
