With one obvious exception, there is probably no tale that is so closely associated with the holiday season or more embodies what Christmas is all about than Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This famous tale of a miser’s journey to self-redemption has been re-imagined countless times in novels, plays, musicals, movies and television. For me, it doesn’t truly feel like Christmas until I’ve watched some version of this story and heard that classic line from Tiny Tim, “God bless us, every one!”
While there are countless ways to watch the tale, one of the most entertaining has to be on the stage. Now in its 34th year, Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre’s production is a great way to share this classic tale and all its magic with your children.

Generations of A Christmas Carol
Since he was six years old, every December my oldest son and I get dressed to the nines, and head out for a “Mom Date”. We go eat someplace that has an actual tablecloth and fancy delicacies such as “chicken on a stick” (aka satay at Surin) and I teach him how to hold doors open for ladies and how to order. This dinner is always followed by a show, namely Fantasy Playhouse’s A Christmas Carol, a holiday play I attended in the same playhouse when I was a girl.
The show has come full circle, and I’m taking my son to see it – this Huntsville tradition is in its 34th year! The musical brings to life Charles Dickens’ beloved story of Ebeneezer Scrooge and his transformation as he is visited on Christmas Eve by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
Beautifully staged with elegant period costumes, sets, lighting and wonderful special effects, this show takes the audience to nineteenth century London where Scrooge, Marley’s ghost, Tiny Tim and the rest of the familiar characters tell the tale of one man’s redemption and bring the Christmas spirit to us all.
More than 100 local volunteers, both on-stage and behind the scenes, work together to bring the magic alive year after year.

Participating annually in A Christmas Carol as an audience member is one thing, as a cast member entirely another. “There are several families that have multiple members involved in the show on stage and off,” says Karen Mockensturm, Executive Director of Fantasy Playhouse. You will often find that production is a family affair, with brothers and sisters, parents, and spouses all sharing their talents.
