Eclipse Parties in Huntsville & Beyond
Everyone in Huntsville has Eclipse Fever, and we don’t blame them. This is a very special opportunity to experience a total eclipse of the sun, something that hasn’t occurred in the southern US since 1979, and won’t again until 2023 (but that one won’t be anywhere near Huntsville).
Madison City Schools decided to dismiss early for the occasion, and Madison County and Huntsville City Schools are having classroom viewing parties and observation activities. Check and see what your school has decided to do HERE.
If your family wants to take full advantage of this astronomical wonder, here are a few places in Huntsville that are hosting events for the public.
UAH Eclipse Events

To celebrate this rare cosmic event, the University of Alabama in Huntsville is presenting several activities leading up the eclipse to engage the local community. Most of the events are open to the public, and include a movie, special lectures, displays on scientific, historic, cultural and artistic aspects of Solar Eclipses, and viewing events on campus. These public events are recommended for older kids and are not especially little-kid friendly.

Seriously the BEST place to eclipse party for big space enthusiasts! This special event includes admission to the USSRC (check out the Science of Rock N’ Roll exhibit while you’re there!), a barbecue lunch plate, eclipse viewing glasses and a special performance by The Huntsville Community Band. Guests must preregister to receive a meal. Admission for walk-in guests on the day of the event will not include lunch, and viewing glasses will subject to availability day-of. Tickets are going FAST!
Huntsville Botanical Garden

America will be treated to its first coast to coast total solar eclipse in nearly 100 years, and The Garden is the perfect setting for this special event. Kick off the party with lunch and beverages including homemade Moon Pies and Solar Eclipse Cocktails for mom & dad. All guests receive Solar Eclipse Shades for the viewing. Face painting and crafts for the kids.
Party at the Library
Monday, August 21

This fun event is for all ages, but with a special focus on kids. There will be themed refreshments and kid’s crafts throughout the day, and eclipse glasses while supplies last (only available for guests at the event, not in advance). Hear some stories about our solar system, enjoy some Sun Chips and Moon Pies, and make some memories with your kiddo.
If You Want Totality…
If you want to experience the eclipse in totality, you’ll need to hit the road and head north. The Nashville area is hosting several great family friendly eclipse parties & events, and you can get a great list HERE from our friends at Nashville Fun for Families. Gas up, plan ahead, and don’t get stuck in traffic if you can help it!
Whether your kids will be in school or out, it’s imperative you talk to them about how to safely observe the eclipse, and that this awesome astronomical event is something you can talk and reminisce about for years to come!
