Local Heroes: Huntsville Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Delivers Expert Care for North Alabama Families
As parents, we know there’s nothing more unsettling than a health scare involving your child. For specialized pediatric heart care, families in North Alabama have often faced long, anxious drives to Birmingham or Nashville due to limited local availability.
Today, many of those trips can now be avoided thanks to expanded pediatric cardiology services available right here in Huntsville.
Huntsville Hospital Heart Center Pediatric Cardiology is delivering world-class cardiac expertise right here at home, providing a critical, local option for families, from newborns up to 18-year-olds.
Meet the Experts Saving Lives Locally
Did you know there are only around 20 pediatric cardiologists in the entire state of Alabama? And two of them, Dr. Daniel Caicedo and Dr. Kanya Singhapakdi, are right here in Huntsville!
In their first year alone, Dr. Caicedo, Dr. Singhapakdi, and their dedicated team cared for nearly 1,900 children, demonstrating the immediate, critical need for this service. The program is part of Huntsville Hospital’s award-winning cardiac care program, now expanded to serve our community’s youngest residents.

Mateo and Kellin: Two Stories of Local Resilience
The true impact of having this specialized care in Huntsville is seen in the resilience of patients like Mateo and Kellin.
Mateo’s Journey: Thriving After Surgery
When little Mateo was only five months old, his pediatrician noticed he wasn’t gaining weight and had an abnormal heart sound. A specialized heart ultrasound, called an echocardiogram, performed by the HH Pediatric Cardiology team, revealed the source: two holes in his tiny heart.
Drs. Caicedo and Singhapakdi and the rest of the clinical team carefully monitored Mateo until he was ready for surgical repair. Though he battled multiple respiratory illnesses during this time, he fought through.
After successful surgery, the moment he returned for his follow-up was truly moving. As Dr. Caicedo noted, seeing Mateo “breathing comfortably, gaining weight appropriately, and without recurrent admissions, represented more than just a good surgical outcome. For the team, it symbolized the culmination of coordinated care… and the emotional relief and joy in seeing a previously fragile infant thrive, reminding everyone why these efforts matter.”
Mateo’s mom perfectly summed up their experience, sharing, “The doctors know exactly what they’re doing, and Dr. Caicedo is the best.”

Kellin’s Story: An All-Star Pitcher with a Hidden Problem
At just 11 years old, Kellin looked like a healthy, active kid and an all-star baseball pitcher. But a routine checkup revealed a dangerous blood pressure reading of 182. There were no warning signs. No headaches, no chest pain. But something was critically wrong.
An echocardiogram revealed Kellin had been born with a severe narrowing of his aorta. Without the immediate treatment they were able to provide locally, Kellin faced the risk of permanent heart damage. Because the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic had the right equipment and expertise, they caught it in time, saving his heart and his future.
The Power of Local Diagnosis (And How You Can Self-Refer!)
The ability to diagnose serious conditions right here in Huntsville is thanks in part to community support. The ultrasound technology used to diagnose Mateo and Kellin was generously funded by The Huntsville Hospital Foundation, helping the clinic provide more than 150 heart scans each month.
The best part for parents? You no longer face long, anxious drives. The clinic offers a wide range of services right here, including
- Management and treatment of acute and chronic cardiac conditions
- Electrocardiography (ECG)
- Ambulatory arrhythmia monitoring
- Exercise testing, and more!
This clinic is a critical resource that offers peace of mind. If you suspect an issue or have concerns, the great news is that families have the ability to self-refer, making access to this specialized care easier than ever.
Dr. Singhapakdi, Dr. Caicedo, and the entire Pediatric Cardiology team are here to ensure that every little heart in North Alabama has the chance to grow strong and healthy right here at home.
