It’s My Party: Dumbo Themed First Birthday

Planning a party is one of the parts of a parent’s job description that can be the most daunting. What’s age-appropriate? Where are the best places to consider as party venues in Huntsville and Madison County? How can you throw a good party and stay within your budget? We plan on helping busy parents find the answers to those questions and more in our series, “It’s My Party“, where we invite real, local parents to share their great party planning experiences with other readers.

Dumbo Themed Birthday Party

Age & gender of child: Boy, 1 year old

Party Theme: Dumbo & circus

Party Location: Capshaw Baptist Church

Facility Rental Costs: $100

Number of Party Guests: 55

Invitations: We used Facebook Events

Decorations & Food

The Cake: For the smash cake, we simply had my mom make it based off of Pinterest and topped it with a cute Dumbo keepsake figurine and gold “1.”

More Food & Drink: For my son’s first birthday we had a ton of family coming so we tried to have both kid and adult-friendly food. We had PB&Jbites (cut out with small cookie cutters), chips, fruit, mini cupcakes, a small cake just for guests, and several beverages including juice boxes and soda.

Decorations: For this party I relied heavily on Pinterest, Amazon, and Etsy for ideas and cute party supplies.

Favors & Activities

Games & Activities: Since my son wasn’t really walking at this point we didn’t have any games but, because the venue was in the gym of the church, we had tons of balls for the kids to run around with. We also had a coloring table with Dumbo color pages.

Favors: For party favors I took baby food jars and dressed them up with some paint and cute card stock. I filled them with cotton candy  to go with our circus & Dumbo theme. I also filled small goodie bags with gold fish and out my son’s initial on them.

Circus Party Pro-Tips

This was a fun Dumbo-themed party and not as difficult as it may sound to pull off. I bought a piece of Dumbo fabric and used the colors in it (aqua and gold) to be the foundation of the party. I found many cute items on Etsy that fit right in, and used the dollar store for cheap utensils, plates, napkins, and cups. Other than that, my mom and I really worked on DIY crafts to make the party complete. We hand-made the banner, the garlands hung from the ceiling, and used balloons to add volume and color without breaking the bank. Balloons are the best way to fill a room without costing a ton!
