Save Room for Dessert at Edgar’s Bakery
Huntsville’s restaurant revolution continues, and one step into Edgar’s Bakery might convince you Willy Wonka was involved.
Edgar’s is a small, Alabama-based chain, with five Birmingham-area locations, a location in Tuscaloosa, and the newest location at Providence in Huntsville. Its first foot forward is as a bakery, but it also features full breakfast and lunch menus, as well as comprehensive catering services. Lea, the boys, and I went by for lunch recently.
The service model at Edgar’s is fast casual, in which you place your order at the counter, and it is brought to you at your table. For lunch, there are salads, sandwiches, and wraps, including traditional and signature offerings. I count at least two dozen sandwiches on the menu, so there’s a lot of replay value here. (I’ll be coming back for soup of the day in a sourdough bowl, too.)
Elevating the Sandwich
Lea and Aaron went for pretty traditional offerings with chicken salad and turkey, while Nathan and I stepped out a bit. Nathan’s BLT featured a fried green tomato, and it was prepared on fresh pumpernickel. I had the Edgar’s club wrap, served with ranch dressing. Edgar’s uses Boar’s Head meats exclusively, and we all spoke highly of our sandwiches.
Everyone received potato chips, but we also each got one of the house side items. Lea’s side was a piquant pepper slaw that I eventually ended up dabbing on my wrap. (She did offer to share.) It was flavorful without overpowering with salt or vinegar. I enjoyed a fresh fruit cocktail, while Nathan had a baked potato salad.
The breakfast menu is comprehensive, including the standard items you would expect, as well as several gourmet offerings. There is a take on the Monte Cristo here with ham, egg, and Swiss. Eggs Benedict, quiche, and multiple omelets are also available. Pastries include muffins, bear claws, cinnamon rolls, and croissants. Espresso, frappes, and lattes round out the coffee offerings. I’m looking forward to coming back for breakfast. (That will probably be a solo trip on my way to work one morning, which is sure to draw the good-natured ire of my family. Heh.)
The dessert menu is, well, most of the point, isn’t it?
This is a wonderland of baked goods, with what may well be a million calories on display in the case. We partook of Edgar’s signature strawberry cake, a few petit fours, and a “chocolate decadence” cake. Everything was delectable, and there’s a great bonus — a separate checkout line intended only for the baked goods. If you are a cakes and cookies person, Edgar’s will keep you busy for some time. Additionally, there are seasonal offerings, and Edgar’s will even prepare a wedding cake for you.
Just for Kids
The Edgar’s kids’ menu includes lunch selections of grilled cheese, turkey, ham, or peanut butter & jelly, on white or wheat, for $5. There is no dedicated kids’ menu for breakfast, though meals are scalable with à la carte offerings. Highchairs are available. Restrooms are clean single-seaters. The women’s restroom contains a dedicated changing table. The men’s restroom contains a small dresser that might serve the purpose in a pinch.
Whether breakfast or lunch, all of Edgar’s full meal offerings are in the $6-10 range, making it an eminently affordable family option (and a delightful alternative to national chains). Edgar’s staff was pleasant and prompt, and though there were many customers with us, the large indoor and outdoor dining areas comfortably accommodated everyone.
Edgar’s has put considerable effort into crafting a place you’ll want to spend time, both for its ambience and its memorable, yet affordable, comestibles. Get it in your #DineHsv rotation!
