For the first time in a long time, all three local school districts get the same Fall Break this year. If you’re like me and staying close to Huntsville, you might be looking for something special to do with the kids during your Staycation. We’ve listed a few of our favorites below – some are free, some are not – but all will help you create some Fall Break memories with your family.
Madison Street Festival
Saturday, October 4th from 9AM-4PM
For 33 years this festival has been happening in downtown Madison, and the weather looks perfect this Saturday for the 34th! It’s everything you want in a giant community block party – greasy food, arts & crafts, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, balloon animals, live music, performances, and demonstrations. Get there early for the Parade – it starts at 9AM but you’ll need to park and stake your claim on a piece of curb well before then. View Website
Fabulous Fall Festival at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens
Monday October 6 – Friday October 10
Cost: Members are free, Non-members charged admission
There’s so much to do at the Garden this Fall Break, you don’t want to miss the fun! All week long there will be special activities, games and crafts for the kids in the Anderson Education Center or Children’s Garden, weather permitting. The big event during Fall Break however is the Fall Festival on Wednesday, October 8. Head to HBG for apple bobbing, Cornhole or making a fall-themed craft. Face painters and music will add to the fun. Enjoy hayrides from 11AM – 3PM or visit the Petting Zoo to see your favorite animals. View Website

Most of these are open during the week and are often cheaper on weekdays (and less crowded!) making it a great time to go if you can. Make a day of it and leave time for lunch. When you get home go ahead and carve up those pumpkins or decorate the house for Fall or Halloween! Be sure to consult our full list of Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes, and Hay Rides to get a good look at all the offerings nearest you. There’s even a Punkin’ Pickin’ Extravaganza Train Ride!
Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt
Go exploring right here in Huntsville! Swing by the Huntsville Visitor Center on Church Street and pick up a Lucky Duck Hunt clue card, or download yours from home HERE. Follow the clues to find all of the bronze ducks hiding around downtown and you’ll discover some awesome Huntsville history quite by accident (the kids won’t even know they’re LEARNING something!). After you find all the ducks, head back to the Visitor Center to collect your prize, then go reward yourself with a job well done with pizza and gelato at Sam & Greg’s. Voila – a perfect Fall Break outing!
