Weekend Roundup September 11-14

If you’re a fan of music and movies, you’ll be pleased with the Weekend Roundup today – there’s lots of both to be had. Each Thursday we sort through the scores of Huntsville events and find the ones that are free, fun, and family-friendly. Spending quality time with the kiddos shouldn’t have to make your wallet sad!

Another thing that will make your wallet happy is consignment season – several of the annual sales start up this weekend. We’ve made it easy for you to prioritize your Fall shopping with our handy Consignment List.

Apples are starting to roll into the local farmer’s markets – check out our great Farmer’s Market Map & List to pick some up for snacking.

There are plenty of opportunities to hear some live music outdoors this weekend. With the cooler temps, it should be a great way to spend some time with your family!

The Historic Huntsville Foundation is bringing Monsters University to the big screen under the stars. Pack up a picnic, lawn chairs, and the kiddos and settle in for a night with Sully and Mike. PRO-TIP: Get there early, to stake your claim on a good seat. These popular movies get crowded quickly!

Arab Historic Village (map)

The Arab Historical Society welcomes the public to the annual fair. There will be demonstration booths for old-time crafts such as soap-making, needle-working, whittling, carving, and folk art. Kid’s games, lumberjack demonstrations, line dancing, wagon rides, and much more are all on the schedule for the day’s activities. Just a short ride to Arab can transport your whole family back in time… and you don’t even need a TARDIS.

The United Way of Madison County & Huntsville is hosting the 2nd annual Community Block Party – there will be a balloon artist, a moon bounce, carnival games, food trucks, and more. Parents can learn more about the important programs that the United Way facilitates while kids play.

Superhero Fun Day

Saturday from 10AM-2PM

Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens (map)

Shake off your alter ego and let your Superhero shine through! Join us for Superhero Fun Day and help raise money for childhood cancer research. Wear your favorite superhero costume or T-shirt and join us for a superhero costume contest, crafts, activities, bounce house, and balloons. You can also get autographs and pictures with some of your favorite superheroes, including The Hulk, Batman, Spiderman, Wolverine, Supergirl and Wonder Woman. There will be shaved ice, and barbecue available for purchase. Proceeds from registrations, and the sale of t-shirts and other childhood cancer items will go to the Children’s Oncology Group, a non-profit research organization that supports St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s of Alabama. The Scarecrow Trail is Open!

Recently named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events for September, the Huntsville Botanical Garden’s annual Scarecrow Trail is open to visitors! Kids will love meandering through the Garden to find their favorite scarecrows. There are 60 to choose from! The theme for this year is “Once Upon A Time,” With our summer exhibit based on fictional characters from a children’s book, we thought this theme would be a perfect follow-up. On display are your favorite fun storybook or nursery rhyme characters. And hay bales for ‘crows on a large scale!
