Support Group Spotlight: GriefShare

There is little (if anything) worse than losing a child. If you have lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel.

GriefShare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone, and there are thousands of groups meeting weekly at locations around the world.

There are four GriefShare groups that meet regularly here in Madison County, and the Madison location just started another 12-week meeting session at Asbury United Methodist Church. Rocket City Mom asked Dana Trulock, Care Ministry Coordinator at Asbury, to tell us about the details of the current session taking place.

Group Mission
GriefShare meets weekly to help those who have suffered a loss of a friend, family member or miscarriage to face the challenges of their grief and move toward rebuilding their life.

How often do you meet?
Weekly on Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm from Aug. 14th to Nov. 13, 2014. You are welcome to attend any session.

What goes on in a typical group meeting?
The meetings all have three distinct elements.

  1. A video seminar with experts: Each week your GriefShare group will watch a video seminar featuring top experts on grief and recovery subjects. These videos are produced in an interesting television magazine format featuring expert interviews, real-life case studies, dramatic reenactments, and on-location video.
  2. Support group discussion with focus: After viewing the video, you and the other group members will spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in that week’s video seminar and what is going on in your lives.
  3. Personal study and reflection: During the week you will have the opportunity to use your workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to help sort out your emotions through journaling. Your group will spend time discussing questions and comments from the workbook study.

Do you participate in other group outings or events?
We do have a special meeting in November that is titled Blue Christmas – Surviving the Holidays.

Is there anything that sets your group apart from other area programs?
GriefShare is a Christian based program open to anyone in our community. The three distinct elements of the meetings really set it apart.

Additional Info

  • There is a $20 fee for the 13 week session for the workbook.
  • You are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any session. Each is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. You will find encouragement and help whenever you begin. You will be able to continue with GriefShare through the next 13-week cycle and view any of the videos you have not seen.
