Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and unpredictable Alabama weather. We hope it hasn’t put a damper on your Spring Break week, but if it has – chin up! It’s looking a bit better for the weekend! As usual, we’ve listed our favorite free and/or cheap things to do with kids in the Huntsville area below to help you plan.

Only in Huntsville will you see a mashup of German and Irish culture on St. Paddy’s Day! It’s the kickoff to this popular music series where both kids and family dogs alike are invited under the rocket. Listening to music and exploring the Davidson Center is free, but you’ll need some cash if you plan on having some German dinner while you’re there.

With the weather warming up, your family will be excited to have three hikes to choose from this weekend, in a variety of difficulty levels. The real treat here though is the guide who will help point out native flora & fauna that your kids might otherwise miss. We love these Land Trust hikes and recommend the Wildflower Trail for kids of all ages!

Each Saturday you can stroll through our vibrant hall as Flying Monkey Artist Market vendors occupy the spaces between the diverse and eclectic studios of Flying Monkey resident artists on the second floor south of historic Lowe Mill A&E. Prepare to be amused, amazed, and delighted by Tennessee valley artists and craftsmen! There’s probably even s0me kid’s classes offered that morning.

Bring your appetite and your instruments for these free weekly concerts in Downtown Huntsville’s back yard. The grill fires up at 5PM for a celebration of music, food and fun – and best of all, it’s all family-friendly! You can even join in if you bring an instrument to jam on.

Bring your little leprechauns to the O’Herb Garden this St. Patrick’s Day. Look for hidden shamrocks, some with magically awesome prizes, crafts, and refreshments. Have your picture taken with Cookie the Leprechaun with the pot of gold coins! Be sure to visit the Purdy Butterfly House while you’re there – their Spring Showers exhibit is lovely!
Civil War Reenactments on the Mountaintop
Saturday from 10AM – 4PM

Kids who love U.S. history will ove this event at Burritt! Observe the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment Muster as these Civil War re-enactors practice marching drills on our green and present the School of the Soldier. This will include demonstrations, Q&A’s, and even lessons on how soldiers would appropriately pack their Civil War gear.
