Local author and naturalist helps kids identify poison ivy before they head out on summer hikes

Local author and naturalist Heather Montgomery recently teamed up with the Land Trust of North Alabama for a delightful and very helpful video for hikers of all ages – How to identify poison ivy.

Families in North Alabama no doubt know a lot already about what a treasure the Land Trust has been to our area. With a focus on conservation, recreation, and education, this organization has truly helped to enhance the quality of life in our community.

That has never been more clear than in these “odd” times we currently live in. Over the last several months area families have been flocking to the more than 70+ miles of public trails that have been developed and maintained by Land Trust volunteers over the last 30 years. Which makes this video especially useful. No one wants a perfectly good hike ruined with poison ivy!

No worries. Montgomery is here to help us move beyond the old adage “leaves of three, let it be” and teaches aspiring outdoorsy folks, both big and small, how to determine what plants to steer clear of and which are totally safe. Did you know plants have teeth and that identifying them and their location can help you identify if they’re harmful?

Watch the full 10 minute video below and be sure to check out Montgomery’s other works including the adorable and informative Bugs Don’t Hug: 6-legged parents and their kids.
