Here at RCM, we love to hear about awesome local students doing big things in our communities. The City of Huntsville’s Community Awareness for Youth program (CAFY) receives nominations from the public and recognizes one student each month. We learned more about this month’s CAFY Student of the Month, Vivica Parker, and what she’s most excited about these days.
Vivica is a senior at Huntsville High that has a long history of volunteering at Huntsville non-profits. (You could even say it’s in her blood!) Her work at Christmas Charities Year Round is what initially resulted in her CAFY nomination, but Vivica’s student resume is equally impressive.

Interview with a Rocket City Teen
Why is community volunteering important to you?
I believe that giving back to those who aren’t as fortunate is the least anyone can do and volunteering just makes me feel good. I’ve been donating and volunteering at Christmas Charities Year Round since elementary school. I like making toy bags for the kids.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
I don’t think this counts as advice exactly, but my VBS teacher once told me that it’s better to believe in God and find out at the end that he isn’t real then to not believe and find out in the end that he is. That really stuck with me.
What superpower do you wish you had?
I’m really into superhero films and I love Professor X and how he can control things with his mind. I think telekinesis would be fun. If I had this power I would most likely joke around and make people say and do ridiculous things.
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
I see myself graduated from college and on track to pursuing my career.
