The North Georgia Mountains Offer a Perfect Retreat for Families

North Georgia offers an incredible variety of outdoor activities and scenic places for the whole family. It is the perfect weekend getaway with the kids to see waterfalls, mountain peaks, and small mountain towns.

Where to Stay in North Georgia

We stayed in a cabin located between Blue Ridge, GA and Helen, GA. Cabins in the area can get a bit pricey, but we found a reasonably priced cabin on AirBnB in Blairsville, GA. We rented the entire wolf cabin at Blood Mountain Cabins. The view from the cabin was gorgeous and it’s just short walk to the Georgia section of the Appalachian trail. It’s also right between several cute towns like Blue Ridge and Helen. The cabin was easy to find, clean and tidy, and had all the basic amenities we needed. We visited this cabin in December. They had everything decked out and decorated for Christmas, my kids LOVED it! It was a sweet special touch. We definitely recommend for a quiet weekend in the North Georgia mountains.

What to do

There are so many activities to do in North Georgia. A few of the activities we did was visit Helton Creek Falls, Anna Ruby Falls, Brasstown Bald, and the small mountain town of Helen. Helton Creek Falls is a hidden gem located in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The falls are split into two cascading sections, with the upper falls measuring at 50 feet and the lower falls measuring at 30 feet. The hike is kid friendly and incredibly short that leads through a dense forest filled with a variety of trees, plants, and wildflowers. The falls are a great spot for a picnic or to simply enjoy the peaceful sound of water cascading down the rocks.

Anna Ruby Falls is another popular waterfall destination in North Georgia. The falls are located near the town of Helen and are part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The trail to the falls is an unhill, paved, half-mile hike that is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Brasstown Bald is the highest mountain peak in the state of Georgia, standing at an elevation of 4,784 feet. The mountain is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers visitors stunning views of the surrounding area. There are several trails that lead to the summit of Brasstown Bald. The shortest trail you can take is a 0.6 mile trail from the Visitor Center, or for those who want a relaxing day you can take a free shuttle (tipping your driver is suggested). On a clear day, you can see four states from the top.

The small town of Helen, Georgia, is in the North Georgia Mountains and is known for its German Alpine-style architecture, charming shops, and delicious German-style restaurants. The town was built to resemble a German village and is a very popular tourist destination. During the summer the town boasts an outdoor adventure destination offering other activities including tubing, canoeing, high ropes courses, and even an alpine coaster.

If you are just getting bakery items, you can get there at any time but if you are getting breakfast, you should get there early.

and we would make a second trip just for the fried cheese

We stopped at JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters on the south side of Helen. They were located outside of the German themed portion of town and fit in more with the other mountain towns in north Georgia. They had some amazing coffee.
