Living in South Huntsville, one our favorite playgrounds to visit is McGucken Park. It’s not quite as crowded as Southside Park or Kids Space, but still has plenty of fun things for kids to climb and explore.
The playground is made up of two larger plastic play sets that’s geared for younger and older children. Both sets feature a surplus of climbing obstacles, two tunnels, slides, and more. Although this park is not as frequented as some of the more popular ones, it could easily be a place to spend a few hours.

Situated in the midst of several softball/baseball fields, the playground at McGucken Park has more than enough parking. The playground is not enclosed, but is a pretty decent distance from the main road. Parents with runners will still want to keep an eye on the parking lot though.
The playground features two tunnels, a variety of slides at different heights, a rock climbing wall, monkey bars, spring ride on toys, and more. Know Before You Go
McGucken Park has a lot to offer for South Huntsville families, or even just those that are looking for new scenery. Here’s a few tips to make your visit better:
- Although there is shade on the benches for caregivers, the playground equipment is mainly in the sun. Be sure to bring the sunscreen and check equipment temperatures before letting the little ones loose.
- The playground is not fenced in, so if you have a runner be prepared to keep a close watch on them.
- There are bathrooms with changing tables available over near the sports fields, but they are not right by the playground. Parents of potty training toddlers will want to check in often since the bathrooms are about a 3 – 5 minute trek from the playground.
- There are occasional games/youth league tournaments at McGucken Park, so it may be more crowded on those days. As a bonus you may can grab some concessions though.
- The playground is encircled by sidewalk and has easy access to Aldridge Creek Greenway, so be sure to bring the riding toys and bikes to stretch out the visit. (You can even ride bikes down the Greenway to Southside Park for an all-day adventure.)
