It was opening weekend at Lyon Family Farms and the crowd was out. Families of older and younger kids alike, rushed into the farm to enjoy the various array of activities offered. There is an abundance of fun to be had, and though we stayed for about 5 hours, we still did not experience all that was offered. Our day was packed with sunshine, games, treats, and good old fashion fun!

Exploring Lyon Family Farm

My kids were so excited to see the landscape of games and activities at Lyon Family Farm. After receiving our wristbands, we entered and immediately went to the map located just inside the entrance. With so many offerings, we decided to stay left and work our way around the farm. The first stop on our adventure was Tuck’s Big Barn. I’m notoriously guilty of forcing education in our outings and this place fits the bill! We learned about many crops that are grown in the south and the kids were surprisingly into it. Their favorite exhibit was the section about bees and the products that are made using honey and wax. Other crops featured were cotton, corn, wheat, and soy.

After a bit of education, we decided to focus purely on the fun. Our visit encompassed visiting the petting zoo (though my kids were afraid to actually “pet” anything), the various slides and moon bounces, the apple blaster, the throwing zone (football, baseball, basketball), the rat race, the playground, swings, and zipline. The absolute favorite part of Lyon Family Farms for the kids was the zipline. This was also the activity that had the longest line. After a brief wait, my husband assisted them with getting properly seated, and away they went. Even my two-year-old Carmyn got to experience the zipline.

My husband’s favorite was the throw zone. Seriously, this guy can turn anything into a sport, so when he saw the balls lined up, the competition in his blood boiled over. He and the girls spent at least 45 minutes throwing balls and “perfecting” the proper ball-handling technique. Not to be left out of the fun, just beyond the throw zone is a giant Connect-Four game. I challenged my husband and of course, he obliged. I am happy to report that I am still the Connect-Four champion of our home!

Finally, after all the games, we made our way over to the old-fashioned swing set. This is where our one-year-old shined. She filled the air with giggles and smiles as she swung side-by-side with her sisters. This activity wrapped up our trip and it was the perfect ending to a great day.

Sweet Treats at Lyon Family Farm

Upon entering, we were gifted (by the sweetest family on their way out) a Big Lyon Punch Card with six punches left to use. After examining the card and the offerings listed on it, we all jumped at the chance to get a bag of kettle corn for two punches. It was simply the best kettle corn I’ve ever had. Cooked fresh on site, the popcorn was sweet, salty, and warm. We also enjoyed fresh-squeezed lemonade, funnel cakes, and to take home, we used our three remaining punches on a ½ dozen of assorted doughnuts from Lizzie Lou’s. They too, were simply divine!

Others things to enjoy on the Farm

Corn maze (the kids were not interested, but my husband and I can’t wait to get back and explore the maze.
Pick your own flowers (I so badly want to fill my home with these beautiful flowers).
Pig races (just because I’ve never seen a pig run).
Gift shop (there were too many things to list but I am anxious to revisit and purchase several items).
Turkey Leg and Roasted Corn (I seriously drooled when I smelled these two items).

Parent Tips

- A parent is needed to ride the zipline. This activity is not something that a child can do alone.
- There are activities for all age groups.
- There are indoor restrooms at the entrance.
- Sunscreen is advisable as the shading is limited.
- There is an abundance of seating near the two food pavilions, one at the entrance, and the other at the rear just outside of the corn maze.
- Socks are recommended for the moon bounces and slides.
  Even the adults will get in on the fun with the apple canon.
