Every woman has the right to safe and respectful maternal health care. But right now, in the USA, some moms are more at risk than others of dying during childbirth.

While the overall proportion of women who do not survive pregnancy and childbearing is on the rise in this country, marginalized women tend to be at greater risk than others. In particular, Black women are dying at a rate three to four times higher than White women, a pattern that has persisted across the country for generations.

This and other health disparities is why maternal awareness, advocacy and support are so important. Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) was founded and led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance. In support of Black Maternal Health Week 2019, local black birth workers, to include doulas and lactation consultants, will gather across the city for maternal health focused events highlighting and addressing the urgent challenges Black women face before, during and after pregnancy. These events will feature critical discussions, Q&A sessions, demonstrations and giveaways. All events are free and open to anyone wanting to learn more.
