Weekend Roundup October 16-19

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Fall here in Huntsville, and the season is usually very short – blink and you’ll miss it. That’s a great excuse to grab Fall with both hands and get out and enjoy it while you can! As always, we list below our top picks for free/cheap events in Huntsville and the surrounding areas that are perfect activities for families to do together.

Pop-Up Parks Return to Downtown

This Friday – October 26

Move out the cars and bring in the people! Downtown Huntsville Inc. is bringing back last year’s popular Pop-Up Park competition and the winners are Huntsville residents. This competition between local small businesses will judge who can create the best “park” that’s small enough to fit inside a standard parking space. All parks will be set up between historic Courthouse Square and Washington Street. Fun for the whole family!

Free Day @ HSVBG

Saturday from 10AM-2PM

Visit HBG for free AND support a great cause! Make a school supply donation to Free 2 Teach at the Gardens – No. 2 pencils, pens, crayons, washable markers, glue sticks, copy paper and loose leaf paper (at least one item per person) – and enjoy the Scarecrow Trail, the Children’s Garden, the Butterfly House, and all the other delights of HBG. It’s a win-win!

Drop In & Create: Wearable Art

Saturday from 11AM – 1PM

Explore the imaginative and fantastic forms in Ginny Ruffner: Aesthetic Engineering exhibit, then make a wearable work of art using tooling foil, art papers, wire and beads. These Family Programs offer fun, interactive art making activities for families with children ages 3 and up that will sure to spark one’s creativity! No registration is required – drop-in, make and take a fantastic work of art home with you.

Zombie Kidz Karnival

Saturday from Noon – 4PM
Cost: $5 per child, adults free

The only thing zombie-like at this fun old-fashioned carnival is the face painting and interactive Zombie Dance your kids will love to learn at the event! You can play games from the 1800’s ’til today, and listen to ghost stories, do the cupcake walk, and fish for prizes. Appropriate for kids of all ages. Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll

Sunday from 2PM – 4:30PM

Rescheduled from last week’s storms! Huntsville’s Maple Hill Cemetery is the oldest and largest in Huntsville, with over 100 acres & 80,000 burials. The fall foliage is beautiful, and each year historic costumed personalities tell the colorful tales of Huntsville’s past at the annual Cemetery Stroll. The kids will love to hear the stories and wander through the grounds talking to characters. (You’ll love the Fall photo opportunities!) Be sure to say hello to Lilly Flagg, the famous Huntsville cow!

A Children’s Concert

First Baptist of Huntsville (map)

The Orchestra at First Baptist Huntsville is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a concert for everyone especially children and their families. Repertoire will include favorites “The Tale of Bushy (the Selfish Squirrel)”, “A Very Veggie Tales Medley”, “Medley from Frozen”, “Cartoon Symphony”, and other favorites. There will also be a saxophone demonstration and children’s time. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to introduce your child to orchestral music.

Take a Walk with a Ghost

For a special treat, these local Ghost Walks are great for older kids or those that aren’t super spooked by ghost stories. It’s the perfect family activity to get into the Halloween spirit!
