Autism Awareness Events for the Entire Family to Enjoy

There are plenty of Autism Awareness events happening locally and regionally to enjoy.

April is Autism Awareness Month. There are many events, virtual and in-person, happening around North Alabama that you and your family can participate in! Below we have compiled a list of Autism awareness events for the entire family to enjoy.

Local & In-Person Autism Awareness Events

Drive Thru Resource Fair

The Autism Society of North Alabama is hosting a Drive Thru Resource Fair on Saturday, April 10 from 1-2:30. The event will be in the Tec Masters Inc parking lot (641 Wynn Drive Suite 102A, Huntsville, AL 35816). Families will be able to Drive Thru and pick up prepackaged resource bags with a variety of local information included. Please take a few minutes on April 10 to check it out! EarlyWorks Social Story

EarlyWorks Children’s Museum is adding a social story to their website. The goal is to make their museum more inclusive and accessible to all patrons. The social story will be coming soon and will remain posted. This is a great option to add to your family outings in Huntsville! The U.S. Paralympics Cycling Open

The 2021 U.S. Paralympics Cycling Open is coming to Huntsville! The races in Huntsville consist of three different types of road cycling events including men’s and women’s road race, time trials, and handcycling team relay. The events are scheduled to take place April 17-18,2021 in Cummings Research Park. Races begin on Saturday, April 17 at 9 am and continue through April 18 at 5 pm. Virtual Events

The Annual Autism Society of Alabama Walk

The annual Autism Society of Alabama walk is going virtual this year! Join the Society in helping to promote awareness, acceptance, and inclusion by participating. You can walk anywhere and anytime that works for you. You can even create your own team or fundraiser to help raise awareness. Walks can be completed any time in the month of April. Show your support for those living with autism throughout the state by taking a photo at local landmarks, or in your community wearing your event t-shirt and post using the hashtag #Impact4AutismAL. Auctions 4 Autism

Making Connections ASD Networking Group of the Autism Society of Alabama will be hosting their annual Auctions 4 Autism fundraiser, starting April 1, 2021 and will go throughout the entire month of April. Funds generated from this event will allow them to continue providing programs such as: helping families and the community with awareness, understanding, support, assistance, and advocacy; toll free information and referral hotline; resource directory; education; parenting networking groups; camps; first responder trainings, and much more! Regional Autism Awareness Events Worth the Road Trip

Every Piece Matters 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run

Every Piece Matters, LLC is hosting their annual 5k and 1 mile Fun Run. This run will take place at Spring Park in Tuscumbia on April 24. Registration begins at 7 am, or you can pre-register online. Runners/walkers are encouraged to dress up in costume if they wish! The Course goes through Spring Park and downtown Tuscumbia. There will be awards and food after the race, including one-of-a-kind trophies designed by children with Autism! The race will begin at 8:00 for the 5K runners so please be there ahead of time to get checked in. The race for the 1 mile runners will begin at 9:15 so please come early to get checked in.

Cook Museum Sensory Friendly Events

Cook Museum of Natural Science is hosting two sensory friendly events in April, on April 9 and 23 from 2-5pm. During these events, children and their families can explore the Cook Museum at their own pace with additional sensory-based activities available in the Exhibits. For this event, the Museum, in partnership with the Regional Autism Network, aims to provide a relaxed environment for individuals with autism and other sensory or communication needs. Sounds will be lowered, crowds will be limited, and a designated quiet room will be available. Tickets and event information can be found here or by calling the front desk at 256-351-4505.

Annual Funky Fish Fry

Finally, if you are looking for a day trip, Mitchell’s Place is partnering with Avondale Brewing to hose their 11th Annual Funky Fish Fry. The event will take place at Avondale Brewing, 201 41 St. S, Birmingham, AL on Saturday, April 10 from 6:30AM – 12PM. There will be catfish from Ezell’s Catfish and live music. Tickets are 2 for $40 or 1 for $25. Your ticket includes entry, a plate of food, and a brew from Avondale. General admission tickets are $10. Free admission for children 12 and under. All these events are family-friendly and open to all ages!


Ashley McLain has spent seven and a half years as a public educator in English and Special Education. She continues to follow her passion for Special Education in her new role as the Coordinator of the Regional Autism Network (RAN) at UAH. Ashley is the mom of a toddler and looks forward to sharing some of her and her husbands favorite childhood things with him as he gets older, especially Harry Potter.
