Igniting the Power and Promise of Youth: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tennessee Valley
The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Tennessee Valley mission is to create and support 1:1 mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. It is our vision that all youth achieve their potential.
What is BBBS all about? What’s the big mission that drives your work?
We create life-changing mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and children in our community. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong, enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their
lives for the better, forever. We serve youth ages 6-18 throughout the Tennessee Valley.
Let’s talk impact! What are some of the biggest ways BBBS has made a difference in the community?
Our mentoring relationships help youth improve their academic performance, build stronger relationships with family and peers, and develop greater confidence in their abilities. Children in our programs are more likely to graduate high school, pursue higher
education, and avoid risky behaviors. We’ve seen countless “Littles” transform through the consistent support of their “Bigs”—from struggling students becoming honor roll achievers to shy children discovering their voice and leadership potential.
Who do you serve, and what’s something people might not realize about the needs in our community?
We serve children from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom come from single-parent households, military families, and those facing economic or social challenges. Many people don’t realize that thousands of children in our area lack consistent positive
adult role models outside their immediate family. These young people simply need someone who believes in them, listens to them, and shows up consistently—and that relationship can change the entire trajectory of their lives.
What is the most rewarding part of your work at BBBS?
Witnessing the transformation in both our Littles and our Bigs. We see children discover their potential and adults rediscover the joy of making a direct impact in a young person’s life. The relationships formed through our program create ripple effects that extend to families, schools, and the entire community.

Become a Big! We need adult volunteers who can commit to spending time with a child regularly—just a few hours twice a month can make a tremendous difference.
