Crafting with Kids: Mardi Gras Mask

Huntsville’s Mardi Gras Parade is right around the corner, and what better way for your little one dress for this mega-fun event than in their very own DIY mask? This inexpensive version can be made using the thin cardboard from cereal boxes or other food packaging, and if you don’t have gobs of those plastic beaded Mardi Gras necklaces already on hand, you can grab them on-the-cheap (think 30 cents each) at a party supply store like Party City.

We used traditional Mardi Gras colors, but feel free to let your little ones choose their own favorite color palette. Depending on their age, they can complete different steps of the mask on their own. But no matter their skill level, they’ll have a blast showing off their finished creation at their local parade!

What you need:

  • Mask template
  • Thin cardboard (recycled food boxes work great!)
  • Green and purple tissue paper
  • 1-2 Mardi Gras necklaces
  • Thin elastic
  • Yellow feathers
  • Mod Podge
  • White craft glue
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Hole punch

How to Make This Mardi Gras Mask Craft:

  1. Print the mask template at 100% and cut it out. Use a pencil to trace of 2 masks onto thin cardboard; cut both of them out. Set one aside for step 6
  2. MardiGrasMask-Step1

  3. Cut the green and purple tissue into ½” – 1” strips. Cut the strips into small rectangles.
  4. Working over a protected surface, brush a thin coat of Mod Podge onto a section of the mask. Let your child begin sticking the green and purple tissue paper onto the mask. Paint another thin coat of Mod Podge over the confetti, and let your child apply more confetti on top of the first layer.
  5. Repeat step 3, working in sections across the mask until it is completely covered in confetti. Let the mask dry completely before continuing.
  6. MardiGrasMask-Step2

  7. Turn the mask over so it is wrong side up. Apply a generous amount of white craft glue to the upper left and right corners of the mask. Let your child apply 3 or 4 feathers to the corners of the mask so that they extend out from the mask.
  8. Take the second blank mask that you set aside in step 1, and glue it to the wrong side of the feathered mask. Let dry completely. (If needed, you can use clothespins to hold the 2 masks together while they dry!)
  9. Use a hole punch to punch 2 holes on the left and right sides of the mask, about ¾” in from each side.
  10. Cut the string of one of your necklaces so that it is one long strand of beads. Apply a generous line of white glue across the top front of the mask. Starting at the top left corner, begin adhering the strand of beads to the glue. Continue around the outer edge of the mask, applying a line of glue and then adhering the beads, until you reach the beginning. Trim the excess at the end.
  11. Repeat step 8 around each eye of the mask.
  12. Let the mask dry completely. Tie a strand of thin elastic through one hole of the mask, wrap the elastic around your child’s head to fit, and tie off through the other hole. (Alternatively, you can tie two lengths of ribbon to the mask, one in each hole, and use this to tie the mask to your child’s head.)

Laissez les bons temps rouler with this adorable Mardi Gras mask craft – enjoy the parade!
