Ahhhh… summer in Huntsville. Lighting bugs, swimming pools, & sweet tea abound!

There’s so much to see and do before summer is over, and thankfully we still have a few weeks to fit it all in. Below you’ll find our top picks for free and/or cheap family-friendly fun this weekend in Huntsville to help you do just that. WERU_#1TN Valley Hunting & Fishing Expo

Friday – Sunday
Cost: FREE admission for kids 12 & under, Adults $10

The TVHFE is a weekend entertainment experience that is designed for outdoor enthusiast of all kinds. Families can pursue their shared passion for the great outdoors in a relaxed and entertaining setting, and also see Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel and other guests. Expo hours are: Friday July 10th 3pm – 9pm; Saturday July 11th 9am – 9pm; and Sunday July 12th 10am – 5pm.

WERU_#2Spanish Summer Fiesta

Friday from 4-8 PM
Cost: FREE
Big Spring Park Gazebo, Huntsville (map)

Families can enjoy an afternoon in the park with live music, art, Latin Band Group, and Salsa dancing presented by Rosie’s International Services, Inc. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and drinks. Friendly dogs on leashes welcome. For more information call: 256-429-8039.

Friday from 6-10 PM

Huntsville Historic Foundation is once again sponsoring this summer favorite. While these movies aren’t indoors, since they occur in the evening it’s bound to be a little cooler, right? Festivities begin at 6PM, with face painting, magicians, and Family Fun Hour provided by the YMCA. Food trucks and vendors will begin setting up at 5pm, so arrive early with blankets and lawn chairs and grab a bite while waiting for the movie to begin. Big Spring Park East is in the Entertainment District, steps away from courthouse square restaurants where you may purchase your beverage of choice. Friday’s flick – The Princess Bride!

WERU_#4Get Messy at Hays

Saturday at 10AM & 1PM
Cost: FREE
Hays Nature Preserve (map)

This week’s Play Days at Hays sessions will help your kids learn, play and make observations of red clay using their senses and some science tools like magnifying glasses and tweezers. This could get a bit dirty under the nails, so Operation Green Team will provide gloves. Space is limited & reservations are required. Call 256-532-5326 to reserve your spot and to get more information. NOTE: For all these events, children should wear old comfortable shoes and play clothes that can get a bit dirty. Don’t forget a bottle of water. Your preferred insect repellant, especially on the lower legs, will help fend off unwanted insect bites. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the sessions.

The complimentary camp is open to boys & girls ages 6-17. The camp will feature University of Alabama basketball players as counselors, and all participants will receive a t-shirt and group photo for attending. A registration form must be filled out by a parent/guardian in order to participate. These may be filled out the day of the event, at or online at www.sarrelldental.org.

Downtown Huntsville Inc. is once again providing beaucoup opportunities to hear live music this summer. The Grotto Lights Concert Series in Big Spring Park East takes place the Second Saturday of each month – this month Bad Brad & the Sipsey Slims will perform. Picnic suppers, lawn chairs, & blankets are all welcome. Don’t forget the bug spray!
