Happy Labor Day weekend! We hope you can enjoy some quality time by the pool or the grill with your family, but don’t stop there. There are LOTS of fun things to do in Huntsville and North Alabama this weekend, and we’ve listed some of our favorites below to help you plan.

Whiz Kids Open Gym Time

Friday at 9:15AM and Saturday at 8:30AM

Whiz Kids Open Gyms are a great way for children under age 6 to get extra time in our facilities for some FUN! Your little one can bounce, launch, swing, and flip to their heart’s content in a safe environment. Read our Parent Review for more tips before you go.

Concerts on the Dock is Back!

Friday from 6-9 PM

Our favorite family-friendly concert series is back to kick off the holiday weekend! Grab the kids, a picnic supper, and your lawn chairs and head to Lowe Mill for the first concert in the popular Fall Concerts on the Dock series. Home Depot Kid’s Workshop

Saturday from 9AM – Noon
Cost: FREE, online registration required

Kids can construct and decorate their own pencil box at this back-to-school workshop designed for children ages 5–12. Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment. All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE apron, pin and certificate.

Yoga By the River

Saturday at 9:00AM

Hays Nature Preserve | More Info

Leave the kids at home for this one – moms & dads can enjoy a relaxing morning of yoga taught by Whitnye Rose or Rebekah Frank beside the gentle waters of the Flint River in Hays Nature Preserve. All you have to bring with you is your yoga mat, water, and a towel! Signs will direct you where to go once you are in Hays Nature Preserve.

Summer Sessions Concert in Decatur

Saturday from 7-10 PM
Cost: FREE
Daikin Ampitheatre, Founder’s Park | More Info

This is a free, family friendly event at Founders Park in Historic Decatur Alabama’s Arts and Entertainment District. There will also be a canned food drive for local non-profit food pantries as a way to help the community. This is an outdoor event, so please bring lawn chairs or blankets because seating is not provided. Tosha Hill is performing.

Rocket City Championship Wrestling

Saturday from 7-9:30 PM

The Hooligans are back to battle JI and… a Mystery Partner? This is bound to be a night of family-friendly wrastlin’ fun for those who love the sport or simply want to find out what it’s all about. One thing’s for sure – read our Parent Review for lots more details before you go this week!

Caribbean Day in the Park

Sunday from 8AM – 5PM

This annual event is tons of fun! Face-painting, arts & crafts, Caribbean board games, musical chairs and a dozen other activites just for kids and families are included, as well as a host of vendors selling curried, jerk, and stewed delicacies will be on site to serve the festive crowd. Attendees will be treated with a slew of Caribbean entertainment, like live music, Caribbean dancing and performances by Soca Music artist. Bring your lawn chairs and stay all day and into the night!

SMASH Teen Skate Night

Sunday from 7-11 PM
Cost: First 100 kids FREE!

Join SMASH (Student Movement Against Stigma and Hate)
First 100 kids get free entry after that admission is charged. SMASH is a teen advocacy group that is comprised of local high school students who are passionate about educating their peers on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness. The group works to reduce ignorance, promote acceptance, and stress the importance of communication between teens and the important people in their lives.

Scarecrows New Sculptures at HBG!

Opening Weekend
Cost: $8-12, or included in membership
Huntsville BotanicalGarden | More Info

Families will love these new kinetic sculptures installed all around the Garden! American sculptor George Sherwood’s work is usually made of stainless steel, the reflective qualities of which integrate the sculpture into its environment. Happening now – Nov. 30. The Scarecrow Trail also opens September 1st and runs through October 31st. It’s a great weekend to be at The Garden!

Last Chance to Pan for Gold

Now – Tuesday from 10AM – 4PM
Cost: $10, or free for members
Burritt on the Mountain | More Info

It’s your last weekend to head up and enjoy the mountain air while the kids Hunt for Treasure on Gold Mountain. Experience the Alabama Gold Rush of 1829 as you “arrive” on the stagecoach, shop in the General Store for provisions, build a cabin out of child-size faux logs, pan for gold in the sluice, get hands-on experience with daily chores, and much, much more. Northeast Alabama State Fair

Thursday – Tuesday
Cost: Admission $4-7, armband prices here

Since 1962, the Huntsville Jaycees have worked hard to provide the citizens of Huntsville and all of North Alabama with a fun, family oriented Fair. This year’s Fair offers something for everyone both young and young at heart. There will be magic shows, a petting zoo, live music & entertainment, and of course – RIDES!
