Fall Break is coming to a close, but there’s still plenty of things to do around Huntsville and North Alabama this weekend! Every week we list our top favorite free and/or cheap things happening in the area, but there’s plenty more to be found on our full Event Calendar.

Cullman Ocktoberfest

Where German Heritage is greeted with a Southern Style! Eight days of traditional German Music, food, dancing, a classic car show, arts & crafts, Hundfest, Bratwurst Eating contest, Miss Oktoberfest, the Burgermeister Ball, Stein Hoisting contest and the Cullman Comnunity Lion’s Club Bed Race are just a few events that you can enjoy while visiting our Craft Beer Garden located in our entertainment district. Authentic German Dinners hosted throughout our downtown, along with guided walking tours, shopping, music and fun, bring Cullman’s German History to life! Gem, Jewelry & Mineral Show
Friday – Sunday
Cost: Donations of $3/Adults & $1 Kids over 5

Sponsored by the Huntsville Gem and Mineral society, this is the largest gem and mineral show in the region and fun for the whole family! With lots of activities for kids so they can have a great time and learn at the same time. Activities include the popular Fluorescence Display, a gem dig, a flume mining activity and more!
The Last Dock Concert

Join us for the final Concert on the Dock of the Fall season with Debbie Bond & The Trudats! Singer, guitar player and songwriter Debbie Bond has been paying her dues in the Alabama backwoods for over 30 years. This free, family friendly series is all about creating a laid back atmosphere for families & friends to enjoy original music and interesting new acts. Bring chairs, picnics, friends and pets on a leash and join us under the water tower!

A day full of special events is planned to help celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week. A raptor show, wildlife, corn maze, archery, hay ride, and lots of kid’s activities are all a part of the lineup. Spend a beautiful Fall day outdoors and learning about the native animals of Madison County!
Kids Bowl for Free

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a fun and easy way for you and your company, friends, or family to support the life-changing work of Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you care about kids and can spare an hour to have fun with your family, then Bowl for Kids’ Sake is for you! This football themed event will provide food, drinks, goody bags, t-shirts, and door prizes to participants! Kids 12 and under bowl for free if they have one paying adult.
“The Snow Queen” Debuts

The wicked Snow Queen casts her icy spell on the world, turning young Kay’s heart to ice and making him an eternal prisoner in her Ice Palace at the very top of the world. Gerda, Kay’s friend, braves many dangers to save Kay and break Winter’s grip. Along the way, Gerda encounters talking ravens, the evil Cobweb Spider, a prince and princess, a band of robbers and the wild robber-girl, greedy polar bears and the brave reindeer who carries Gerda across the Arctic wastes. The fast-paced adventure story by Hans Christian Andersen is adapted by Stuart Paterson and performed by Fantasy Playhouse’s young thespians.
Rocket City Mom is a website about raising children in and around Huntsville, Alabama. Started in late 2010 by a local mom and newcomer to Huntsville, Rocket City Mom has grown into a thriving community of local parents and now boasts a staff of four, thirteen regular contributors, and tens of thousands of Tennessee Valley readers making it the #1 Parenting Resource in North Alabama.
All UAH Hockey home games are free for children 12 and under this season. The opening series is this weekend against Connecticut. They’re giving away t-shirts on Friday and trading cards on Saturday. I’ve included a link to all of their promotions for this season’s home games.
