Hello and Happy Weekend from Huntsville!

As always, we like to list our favorite free and/or cheap family friendly fun options that are coming up in the next few days. Despite the rain in the forecast on Friday, there are tons of things to do and even MORE in our full Event Calendar (BTW – did you know you can search for events that are indoors?).

Poke Salat Festival

Friday & Saturday

What is poke salat? Why is this one of the longest-running Alabama festivals? All this and more will be answered! Live music, arts/crafts and vendors are located throughout Downtown, with merchants featuring their wares with sidewalk sales and open houses. Festivities include the Taking it to The Streets Motorcycle Ride By and Show, Pet Parade, Hula Hoop Hoopla, Open Mic times, and more. Visits with Disney princesses and lots of kid’s activities & food are also on the schedule.

Rocket City Consignment Pre Grand Opening

Friday – Sunday

Need summer play clothes for the kids? Rocket City Consignment has moved and is launching their new services to the public on June 1. They will now offer year round storage and drop off, tagging services, individual tax receipts for consignors, and they even buy items outright! This is North Alabama’s only total service sale, where once you have purged any household item (they aren’t just a kids sale, they accept any household item as long as it is not alive or food) into their store, you truly never have to deal with it again. #WINNING

The mother of all block parties is back and better than ever! Classic cars, artists and artisans, musicians and entertainers will pack 2nd Avenue for a street soiree that can’t be missed. Bring the whole family (even Fido) to stroll, laugh, play, dine, and shop until the sun sets and the moon rises over the River City. Look for special children’s activities at every turn!

Singing On the Square

Friday at 6:00 PM

Big Spring Memorial Park, Athens | More Info

Experience small town USA in Athens! Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy an old-fashioned evening of singing on the square (due to construction of Limestone Co. Courthouse this year’s concerts have been relocated to Big Spring Memorial Park at the corner of Beaty and Market Street). Rain Location: Emmanuel Baptist Church @ 1917 US Hwy 72 across from Athens Intermediate School.

Model Boat Races

Saturday & Sunday from 8AM-8PM
Cost: FREE to watch
Brahan Spring Park | More Info

HMBA will be hosting an R/C Model Boat Race in the southern Lagoon an the east side across the lake from the Natitorium. There will be over 160 boats schedules to race May 21 and 22 with some of the classes racing at speeds over 75 mph. Make a day of it by packing a swim suit and picnic and heading over to the Splashpad across the street afterward!

Hike a Hound

Monte Sano Nature Preserve | More Info

Out of the kennels & on to the trails! Come “test hike” an adoptable dog on a short trail (accompanied by a shelter volunteer). Homeless dogs looking for loving homes, they’ll show off their walking skills & outdoor fun! Land Trust of North Alabama will also host a special Land Trust Member hike at 11am. Leashed, friendly dogs welcome (no prong collars, please).

May Street Food Gathering & Cosplay

Sunday from 3-7 PM

NACC is hosting a costume contest and cosplay parade at the Downtown Huntsville Inc. May Street Food Truck Gathering- kids can come in their costumes! There will be live music and over 30 food trucks – all the beloved regulars and some outstanding newcomers. Look for the action on Church Street between Clinton and Williams.

May Madness at a Cool Place

Join our friends at the Ice Plex for a bit of May Madness! $7 admission includes skate rental the entire month of May. Join them for a night of ice skating public session Friday nights in May as well.
