Mia’s Cafe Serves Up a Budget-Friendly Breakfast

Mia's Cafe parent review

Those strip malls that pepper the suburban terrain receive their share of barbs, from good-natured ribbing to outright derision. However, with the Huntsville area in the midst of a full-blown restaurant revolution, you dismiss them at your gustatory peril. There are gems within.

I went to Mia’s Café this month. This is one of my wife Lea’s favorite haunts, and she doesn’t have many. So she was pleased to join me. Mia’s is an independently-owned family restaurant in the shopping center on the southwest corner of US 72 and County Line. It has pleasant and clean diner ambience, with full table service except for the you-take-it check. We were seated promptly, and our server was polite, efficient, and accurate.

Mia’s Cafe Menu

Lea, the boys, and I visited Mia’s for breakfast. The menu is extensive, with all of the staples you’d expect as well as customizations. Eggs to order, choice of meats, and bread/pastry options are all here, with enough different toppings and side items to please any palate. Available substitutions include Egg Beaters, turkey sausage or bacon, and wheat pancakes.

Aaron is a pancake hound, so they got the nod for him. He was complimentary, commenting on the contrast of the slight crispiness outside with the fluffiness inside. Slightly sweet already, he said they really popped with the excellent syrup. You can optionally top the pancakes with chocolate chips, blueberries, bananas, pecans, raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries.

Lea’s French toast was big and fresh, and a good candidate for what I’m getting next time. She, Aaron, and I all got bacon for our meat selection—slight review demerit for avoidable homogeny—which was suitably thick and delicious.

Nathan enjoyed his create-your-own omelet with pepper jack cheese, green peppers, and onions. You can go with a Western omelet or a ham & cheese here, as well. The create-your-own option also includes a choice of cheddar or American cheeses. You can add sausage, ham, or bologna, and the vegetable toppings also include tomatoes, mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, and Spanish olives.

My over-easy eggs were perfect, and my whole wheat toast was appealingly hearty. My fresh fruit side included grapes, blueberries, strawberries, honeydew, and watermelon, and was generously portioned at most of a cup. Other side items available include hash browns, hash brown casserole, grits, cheese grits, and oatmeal.

Breakfast AND Lunch!

Though we did not go for lunch, I would be remiss in not mentioning the offerings. Sandwiches, soups, and salads are available daily. The standard meat-and-three is $10 with cornbread or roll, and there are several options for which availability changes a bit day to day. However, depending on what it is, you can probably hit your favorite on multiple days in a week. For example, catfish is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The chicken and dressing, described by my talented editor as “on point,” is Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. There are many side items available, but again, they change up a bit. Check the menu before heading out.

Mia’s Cafe for Kids

There is no dedicated children’s menu in evidence. However, the affordability of the menu largely mitigates the need for such. Additionally, there are numerous a la carte items on the breakfast menu, so crafting your own is an option. Both highchairs and booster seats are available. Restrooms are clean single-seaters, and the women’s restroom contains a dedicated changing table.

Mia’s has broad appeal. Lea usually has breakfast with a girlfriend, and reports seeing church groups, construction workers, folks with laptops — the sort of universal slice of society a good restaurant attracts. And, with no single menu offering exceeding $10, Mia’s is quite budget-friendly as well. We’ll see you there!
