The Christmas and Holiday season can be extremely hard on a parent’s wallet, especially when you’re trying to figure out a way to keep the kids entertained and off devices when it’s cold outside! Here are some totally free things to do in the Huntsville and North Alabama area that won’t break the bank! I suggest bookmarking it for easy access when you need it most. Totally Free Christmas & Holiday Fun in Huntsville

1.) Visit a Tinsel Trail

This fun tradition is guaranteed to put your family in a festive mood, and it doesn’t cost a thing. Walk through the rows of decorated Christmas trees and listen to holiday tunes while you decide which one wins the honor of being your favorite. Make a game out of it and have the kids design their own award ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place! Even better, there are several to choose from – visit the tree trail closest to you, or hit them all up this year.

2.) Go to a Christmas Parade

They’re fun, they’re free, and you can even collect quite the candy haul at some of them! If you missed the annual Huntsville Christmas Parade there are plenty of others to catch. Get the full schedule of local city parades HERE.

3.) Visit Santa for Free

You don’t have to spend a bundle to see Santa in Huntsville – in fact, there are a few totally free options! The Man in Red roams the grounds of Bridge Street Town Centre close to the giant Christmas tree throughout the season. You can also see him for free at Cabela’s and Parkway Place Mall (no photo package purchase required for a visit). Various one-off free Santa events are also added every year to THIS Nice list.

4.) Free Holiday Fun at Bridge Street

Speaking of Bridge Street… there’s SO much to do there during the holidays, and none of it will make your wallet cry. In addition to Santa, there are free Christmas Light shows throughout the weekends in December, your kid’s favorite characters in the magical Holiday Snow Globe by the north fountains, and snow flurries every Friday. Santa’s Mailbox is located by Red Robin to fill with letters from your Little Ones. Local groups perform holiday music & excerpts from shows throughout the season on weekends as well. 5.) Get Your Christmas Jam On

Music lovers of all ages will undoubtedly enjoy the variety of free annual Christmas concerts offered in Huntsville. They come in all sorts & sizes: The Living Christmas Tree, Tuba Christmas, the Madison City Community Orchestra Christmas Concert, the Celebration of Hope Concert – even concerts in the Library! 6.) Christmas Card Lane

Located downtown and hosted by the Madison Arts Council, Christmas Card Lane has been an annual display for years. Drive down historic Church Street in Madison and see the giant Christmas cards designed by local artists. You can even vote for your favorite! More Details.

7.) Spread the Joy

The family that volunteers together will always have a plentiful supply of Christmas spirit. ‘Tis the season for giving, and what’s more valuable than time? There are several places in Huntsville that allow volunteering with kids, and many have volunteer needs in December. Get the list!

8.) Christmas Fireworks Spectacular

It’s back! The annual Christmas Fireworks Spectacular is December 18th at Milton Frank Stadium and returns to spread Christmas joy in the skies of Huntsville! It’s totally free, so be sure you bundle up and get there early when the gates open at 5 PM to grab a good seat. Fireworks start at 7:00 PM. More Details

9.) Linger at the Library

Seriously. The librarians love it! The WANT you to come hang out in their cozy spaces, reading books and participating in all the great free Library Programs they host.
