Date Night in Huntsville: Below the Radar Beer Dinner

We’re all adults here, right? So, I am going to get right down to brass tacks. I am a very whiny woman when I go a long time without a date with my husband, Adam. I think he is an awesome guy (after almost 15 years of marriage), and, sometimes I really need a break from our 7-year-old twins.

[sws_pullquote_right]This week is a great chance to try Below the Radar if you can – they are offering specials during Huntsville Restaurant Week! #DineHSV[/sws_pullquote_right]

Typically, when we get a date night we end up at a local restaurant and Below the Radar (BTR) is one of our favorite choices. Conveniently located in downtown Huntsville’s Quigley District (this means you can buy a beverage to take away), it boasts some of the finest in-house brews in town. Full disclosure: I have not been a beer drinker since college, but my husband is a connoisseur. I will take a taste as I can appreciate the flavors – especially the uber-hoppies. Get the wings and fries…and the BTR IPA. That is really all you need. End of write up.

Just kidding. BTR does this really lovely 6 Course Beer Dinner one Sunday a month. We were fortunate enough to happen upon the July dinner on our last date night, and it was FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC! Each month features a different brewery, and we scored with French Broad out of Asheville, NC.

The crowd is always great.

Cost

This is a $50 per head event, and all participants were in a private-ish room. There was a separate 60th birthday party in another room that was also partaking in the pairings dinner. The general clientele were in the front/bar area. The dinner started around 6:30, although set to start at 6, but, not being a beer drinker, I had no complaints as it gave me time to have a pre-dinner beverage and a quiet moment with my husband.

This is the August 24 menu – YUM!

The Grub & Suds

The appetizer was a vietnamese shrimp and pork summer roll paired with Ryehopper Rye Pale Ale. This was a light and refreshing full roll with a crisp and refreshing beer. Beautiful!

The second course brought a fried green tomato, baby lettuce, and spicy remoulade paired with Gateway Kolsch. I was a bit skeptical about the German beer, but it was very light and highlighted the plump green tomato well. Intermezzo was arancini de riso with swiss, gouda, and bacon; to drink – 13 Rebels ESB. This is how you do a cheese ball and a beer….bring on SEC football for those with a refined palate!

Before & After

Our fourth course was thai roast beef lettuce rolls and French Broad IPA. I can assure you that you can never go wrong with me or my spouse with a great lettuce wrap and an IPA. It was solid.

Fifth course featured (and I do mean FEATURED) a lamb popsicle alongside French Broad’s Wee Heavy-er Scotch Style Ale. These barrel aged ales really strike a special cord with me, especially since I am merely a sniffer and sipper. I want a sip to pack a punch, and this certainly did that. We finished with a  caramel chocolate cupcake that I must say, before I address the beverage, was potentially the most amazing thing to ever enter my mouth. It came with the Anvil Porter that is now on my husband’s beer hot list. I am no food writer, but trust me when I say every bite of food was beautiful, every sip of beer was gracious, and each pairing was like a great Pearl Jam song. And, if you know me, you know those are the highest marks possible.
