Happy Spring, RCM readers! I love this time of year because we can finally be outside more and get out of our winter “funk.” There are so many exciting opportunities for you and your family to enjoy Athens this month. Here are some great ways to kick-start your Spring!

Athens Historic Walking Tours

All Saturdays in April

Athens-Limestone Visitor Center | More Info

The Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association invites you to join them for free, guided walking tours of Athens each Saturday in April. These tours begin at 10 AM, with registration starting at 9:45. Tour options include the Beaty Historic District, the Alabama Veterans’ Museum, Downtown Athens Historic District, Athens City Cemetery, and Athens State University. This is a fun, educational way for your kids (and you!) to get outside and learn more about the history of their town.

The Compassion Experience

April 4th-6th

The Compassion Experience is a unique event that allows people of all ages to view the life of a child living in poverty in developing countries such as Kenya, the Philippines, Uganda, and the Dominican Republic. Visitors will be able to see markets, schools, and homes recreated for an interactive experience that is sure to leave an impact. Registration is required for crowd control purposes, but this is a free event!

Eli’s Block Party, South!

Come on out to Bethel Church of Christ for Eli’s Block Party! This is a car show fundraiser for the non-profit organization, Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation. This family-friendly event is sure to be a great way to spend a Saturday! Cars, cars, and more cars, plus food trucks and more!

Local celebrities will wait tables to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This year’s celebrities include Mayor Ronnie Marks, City Councilman Frank Travis, East Limestone band director “Miss Sam” Janzen, AHS football coach Cody Gross, APD officer Michael Stainbrook dressed as the Black Panther, and AFD Firefighter Jordan Pugh. This is a great opportunity to have a family dinner while supporting the American Cancer Society!

Andy Leftwich Trio – Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Concert Series

This concert is party of the TN Valley’s Old Time Fiddlers Concert Series, a four-part series leading up to the convention in October. The second concert in this series, Andy Leftwich Trio is joined by Byron House and Cody Kilby for a night of great fiddle music! This would be a great family outing with older kids, or a great date night for you and your spouse!

Athens Funky Fun Run

This untimed, non-competition walk/run is a fundraiser benefiting the Autism Society of Alabama. Registered participants receive a fun run t-shirt. Most of the funds raised will benefit Limestone County and go towards programs, camps, conferences and seminars for people with autism and their families. Along with the fun run, there will be activities for kids, free horse rides, and American Ninja Warrior contestant Megan Dillard will be in attendance with her therapy dog, Zeus. The event is free to attend for spectators, so go support friends or family participating in the fun run!

Cookie Decorating for Beginners

Bring out the whole family for the annual flashlight Easter egg hunt! Food, games, inflatables, and of course the egg hunt make for a fun night for everyone! Times for the egg hunts are: special needs group, 6:00 PM; under 2 years old 6:30 PM; 2 years old 7:00 PM; ages 3-5 7:30 PM; 1st-5th grades and 6th-12th grades 8:00 PM.

12th Annual Cars on the Square

This annual car show is fun for the whole family! Come check out the vintage cars and motorcycles while enjoying the beautiful weather. This car show features a “kids’ zone” with games and activities for the kids. They will even have a chance to win $50 gift cards! There will also be many vendors and food available.

Earth Day and Outdoor Expo

Join the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Association for this expo celebrating our Earth! Indoor and outdoor exhibits, live animals provided by Camp McDowell, crafts, games, and free lunch provided. If your child loves nature, this event is for you!

Weekly Programs at Athens Library in March

Page Turner Program – Tuesdays at 4:00 PM
The Page Turner Program is for 6th – 9th graders who love writing and have stories to tell. There is a 10 person limit in this program due to the number of curriculum books they have. Call 256-232-1233 to register.

Baby Storytime – Wednesdays at 10:15 AM
For babies age 0-18 months. Ms. Amanda and Ms. Ambry lead stories, songs, bounces, tickles, rhymes, and fingerplays!

Toddler and Preschool Storytime – Wednesdays at 11:15 AM
For kids ages 18 mo.-5 years. It is a program focusing on developing a child’s social skills through stories, rhymes, music, felt board activities, and interactive storytelling.

Spectrum Storytime – 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 4:00 PM
This is a program for children of all ages with special needs. The class has a focus on the autism spectrum. There are sensory toys for students to use during storytime. A picture schedule is used so that the children know what to expect. Each child gets a bean bag to sit on so that they have their own special place during the class & lights are dimmed.

Teen Time – 4th Thursday of every month at 4:00- PM
With different themes and topics every month, Teen Time is a place for teens in 7th – 12th grades. Enjoy crafts, science experiments, snacks, book talk, and hanging out!

Story Lab – 1st Friday of the month at 10:15 AM
Registration required; cost is $10 per semester
Story Lab is a program for homeschooled children in kindergarten-6th grades. Students learn facts, listen to a story, and do an activity based on a chosen subject. They will also get a take-home activity so that the learning can continue after they leave the library! Call the Library to register.
