[sws_blue_box box_size=”475″] As part of our Education posts each Tuesday, RCM is featuring a monthly “School Spotlight” to help our readers learn more about private and magnet schools in Madison County. We will continue to highlight the happenings at area public schools, and are excited to expand our education coverage to include more options for local students and their parents. [/sws_blue_box]

We recently interviewed Sherry Lewis, Principal at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Madison. SJS opened its doors in 1996, and is one of the premier Catholic schools in north Alabama. This year, the school board received the “2013 Outstanding School Board Award” from the National Catholic Education Association, a recognition awarded to just ten schools in the country.

School mission:
St. John the Baptist Catholic School is committed to Catholic formation and academic excellence, preparing students to be productive citizens and faith-filled servants of God.

What is your school’s predominant educational philosophy?
Children must be provided hands-on educational experiences that are rooted in faith filled experiences. Home and school work in partnership to provide a strong foundational support system for the education of our children. Catholic schools have always focused on the whole child; providing an environment that supports spiritual, academic, emotional and physical growth. The staff at St. John’s works very hard every day to create a positive and welcoming school climate for our students. We want to make strong connections with them, offer them an engaging curriculum, and help them to grow into responsible, respectful, and faith-filled people.
