Rocket City NerdCon… With Kids!

Over 20,000 residents in the Huntsville metro area hold engineering degrees. We are a city built by wonderful nerds. So it should come as no surprise that this sentiment is embraced and that the first annual Rocket City NerdCon is happening this weekend at the Huntsville Public Library downtown.

But NerdCon is no ordinary Con. It happily embraces ALL kinds of raging fandom: fans of My Little Pony, Doctor Who, Pokemon, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney and Marvel will be in their element.

Plus, it’s very family-friendly. There’s even a panel on Saturday at 3:30 titled “The JOY of Raising Nerdy Kids” that will feature your friends from Rocket City Mom!

“Basically, if people can geek out about it, we want to celebrate it” is the mantra of Connie Chow, the librarian leading the NerdCon planning this year. RCM asked Connie about highlights of the event families particularly would love and she shared her favorites with us below to pass along to you.

Old-School Arcade Games

Hale Games is bringing in a bank of 10 full-size arcade games that will be set up inside the library, featuring classics like Mrs. PacMan, Donkey Kong, and more. Since many kids have never experienced video games arcade-style, this could be a nostalgic way to introduce you little nerds to the way YOU used to game, without the quarter-gobbling part. These games are FREE to play throughout the Con!

Teen Masquerade Ball

This annual ball is happening Saturday from 8PM – midnight and will close out NerdCon. It’s a fun, safe place for teens to be with live music, dancing, food, and – of course – another cosplay contest just for costumed characters under 21.

LEGOS!

Our friends from the Tennessee Valley LEGO Club will be there to lead a LEGO in Motion workshop for kids ages 8 and up on Saturday at 2PM. Get a crash course in stop motion animation using everyone’s favorite brick.

Disney Sing-a-Long

Because there’s nothing like belting out “Let It Go” in a room full of Frozen fans. I hear some other Disney songs will be sung too, but we all know that’s the one that counts. Saturday at 3:30 PM.

Cosplay Contest

Get the ultimate use out of the kids’ Halloween costumes this year and participate in the Cosplay contest at 1PM in the Library Atrium. Bring your Princess Leias and little Links to join the fun. You can even get free face painting by Gabrielle all day Saturday to help get in the spirit. Plus it’s a great opportunity for your kids to meet some of their favorite characters – both the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers and the Alabama Ghostbusters will be there!

This is just a sampling – to get the full schedule check out the Rocket City NerdCon Program Descriptions.
