Rocket City Mom to Host Back To School Skate Benefitting Free2Teach

Strap on those skates and get ready to “roll it out”.

On Saturday, August 8th Rocket City Mom will celebrate the first weekend of the 2015-2016 school year with a Back to School Skate at Carousel Skate Center. Admission and skate rental are FREE although you will need to reserve your space with a ticket (see details below). We’ll have lots of fun games, activities, and door prizes for those in attendance so mark your calendar and start practicing your powerslide!

Skating for a Good Cause

free 2 teach suppliesWe’re hosting this little shindig because it’s a great chance to celebrate the end of summer and the start of a new school year while also meeting/catching up with our readers. However, we have to admit that we do have an ulterior motive. It’s hard for us to resist throwing in a little community action at the same time, so we’re asking that those in attendance bring school supplies to donate to Free 2 Teach.

This local non-profit organization provides free supplies to teachers in Madison County’s three public school systems.  Each year these supplies are available to more than 3,800 classroom teachers and their 52,000 students, improving the educational experience of our children, and strengthening our community’s future workforce.

For a full list of school supplies most commonly requested by teachers visit their site here.

Skating for All Abilities

Because we know there are plenty of coordinated as well as uncoordinated among our readership we’re splitting up the day into two sessions.

Session One

From 11AM-1PM, this is strictly a beginner skate. You’ll likely see me out on the floor during this session and there will definitely be walkers available for the littlest skaters. If it’s been a while since you’ve hit the hardwoods this might be the session for you.

"Bettie Page Turner" will be there!

Session Two

Starting at 1PM, this session is open to the more advanced skaters among us. [sws_highlight hlcolor=”fbfac7″]We’re using the term “advanced” loosely but basically we mean you can make it around the rink without grabbing the carpeted wall. [/sws_highlight] If you have to run into something to stop yourself then you aren’t advanced. 🙂 During this round you’ll likely see our Managing Editor, Stephenie Walker, show off some of her former Dixie Derby Girl moves!

UPDATE: Due to popular demand we are expanding beginner skate and asking that advanced /intermediate skaters join us later in this session (2PM). Those skaters are welcome to stay past the 3PM event time into the evening.
