It’s estimated that roughly ten percent of the population has some form of gluten intolerance ranging from a severe allergy called Celiac Disease to an almost undetectable intolerance that can produce symptoms such as mild to moderate stomach discomfort, acne and joint pain (source). Gluten is the protein found in wheat and several other grains and is difficult to digest in people with intolerance. Unfortunately for the folks with this allergy, a lot of the American diet is composed of grains – pizza crust, sandwich bread, hamburger buns. This makes dining out problematic and sometimes complicated. People with gluten allergies have a much more limited selection when it comes to dining locations. Choosing a restaurant can seem like a daunting task and an inconvenience to others. Personally, I always feel guilty when my friends and family have to make exceptions or special accommodations for me and my gluten intolerance.
If you or someone you know has a gluten allergy or sensitivity, here’s a list of local Valley restaurants that offer gluten free fare. I’m sure this list isn’t comprehensive, but it’s what I’ve found in my 5 years of living gluten free. I’m aware that there are quite a few restaurants in the Huntsville area that offer burgers without a bun and a side salad with no dressing, and they call that a Gluten Free Menu. I didn’t include those restaurants here. I was only interested in listing locations that had a significant selection and/or a specialty item.
